BTW, a person probably took an arrow to knee in this game before any other.

If you don't mind big missions, I can suggest one of Rowena's FMs: "7 Sisters" (a 3 mission campaign) or "Rowena's curse" (it's a single mission, but very spacious and will keep you busy for a long time).
If you want a more "classy" FM, then choose one of ZinkChristine's. "The Night Falcon" is fantastic, but actually it's a campaign of seven missions, so the better option if you don'f have much time is for example "A winter's night" - she's famous for her winter landscapes and cozy cottages .
"Broken Triad" is also a good FM is you like museums, mathematics puzzles and ancient ruins. Don't forget to find a secret in the catacombs in the first part!:ebil:
If your friend and you like creepy missions, then "Rose Cottage" is a perfect choice. Saturnine did a wonderful work here; the only thing is it isn't very typical as you don't have any weapons and don't steal at all. Your only purpose is to solve the puzzle.
If you want some fun, choose "Garrett & the Beanstalk" - it's wildly funny and features some brand new objects!
"Art of thievery" is a really Mechanist-related mission, in which you infiltrate a spacious mansion of an Mechanist acquaintance. Get ready for lots of guards, slaves and a beautiful indoor yard. The only thing you should be aware of is that Hard level is broken and you cannot finish it (maybe something changed, but since I had been playing it, it was broken).
Finally, "Gathering at the inn" - the first FM ever, converted into T2 FM. It has everything you need: guards, nicely decorated rooms and a small part of the City to explore, some non-human beings, a bit of puzzles and a heartly dose of humour.
There are hundreds of wonderful FMs. Each of those mentioned can be found on ThiefMissions.com. Choose one and let the game enchant your friend, it isn't difficult for it:joke:!

If you want to introduce him/her to the world of Thief I'd say go with something more classic. I would recommend Bad Debts or Disorientation (both made by Melan) as they allow for great flexibility in gameplay while still capturing the atmosphere of the original missions.

Choose Rowena's Curse or Ominous Bequest.

If that person is going to actually play and not look over your shoulder. TDP, the first game is the one for them to start with.
It introduces all the elements of the game play and, hopefully, they will develop the habits of THINK FIRST and ACT LATER. It should also encourage them to examine every area they enter, be it room or terrain, minutely to find all the weapons, clues, and secrets.

I'd say start with TDP, but if you really want a FM, I would definitely recommend Disorientation or Bad Debts as Intruder said (because they perfectly recapture that Thief feel), but I think Mission X is probably the best mission you can show in order to introduce someone to the world of Thief.

If it's a male: Ominous Bequest.
If it's a female: Rowena's Curse.
Edit: Of course if it's *really* their first time, I agree they should play through TDP before anything else. The whole spirit of everything else that's come afterwards is built on that.

I thought of Seven Sisters also, but there're so many more.
I think it's best to start TDP first at Normal, then on Hard and then on Expert. After that: TMA, also on Normal, Hard and Expert. TDS isn't neccessary to play, just an option.
Then start with for example the Lord Ashton series and some other missions with new loot, AI's and other food, other ways for a BJ a.s.o.
Then start the bigger missions with puzzles and riddles.
At that point your friend must have played at least 300 issions or so and by then we're in the year 2015 or so :cheeky: :ebil: :thumb:
It's a good thing to introduce a friend to the Thief gameplay and especcially to this forum  :thumb:

Maybe you just tell us something more about your friend and his/her tastes, so we could choose more specified FM? Gloria Creep is right, if he/she is going to play himself/herself, then the mission should be a little bit easier (that eliminates "Art of thievery", "7 Sisters", "Rowena's curse" and even "Rose Cottage" - those missions are thougher than they look). I haven't played "Ominous Bequest", though I want to do it someday, but its sequel, "Broken Triad", was fantastic. To say it honestly, the type of FM that would be the best in such a case as yours depends on your and your friend's personal tastes.
"The Tower" is also great - it's based on a really small map, but it's "built-up" like a skyscraper and full of surprises (some of them are cute and some not :ebil:). In general, look through missions listed by type, for example at Komag's site. "Swamped" was fine, although there's no city theme, which is very important to Thief (that's why I suggest checking out ZinkChristine's stuff; they aren't very complicated, except for "The Falcon..." series). "Gathering..." is classy (heh, nostalgie...) and accommodates nearly every "typical" taffy element (except for the mages, necromants and so on, even though Thief "must-sees" are mentioned somehow). "Garrett & the Beanstalk" is funny, but incomparable. "King's story" shows DromEd's abilities (immersive!!!), but isn't taffy, not to mention that if you don't find a slow-fall potion before you enter the castle, you're doomed to experience only two endings :( .
Demagogue, why do you insist on specifying Slavatrumpevitch's friend's gender? There are more female taffers you think... "Rowena's curse" is a sad story, but I don't think males that played it had such serious problems with it :ebil:.

I think it pretty much depends on what kind of games your friend has played before. If they're familiar with other "retro games" and aren't going to run away screaming when they see outdated graphics and ugly textures, then sure, The Dark Project is probably the best one to start with.
However, if your friend is relatively new to gaming and has only played some more modern games before, I might even recommend Deadly Shadows. I can understand people who are disappointed with it as a Thief sequel, but it's still a really good game in my opinion - I think some of the disappointed people would have been more impressed if the game hadn't been called Thief. So, get your friend hooked to the Thief series with TDS, and if they still want some more Thiefy goodness after that, introduce them to T1 and T2?
Of course some of the more recent T2 fan missions are top-notch as well, but I'm afraid that I can't help you with those.
