I've been thinking about this myself, and I have made a little 'meny' with a couple of missions, with short descriptions of them.
I think it depends on if the friend is going to play themselves, if they are going to be involved with solving how to progress, what to do next, etc.
There are two OMs I think are very good introductions: TG Song of the Caverns and and T2 Life of the Party. Both are varied and not too hard.
T2X mission 2, The Trials That Shape Us is also excellent for this, I think.
Rowena's Curse is great for the story and gameplay, but I were to show a mission for a (hopefully) Thief-fan-to-be, I would want to pick a mission that has rope arrows since they are the ultimate gear in terms of thiefy coolness. :cheeky:
Calendra's Cistern is too hard to play for a newbie, I think, but it would be a great mission to show if the friend doesn't mind if it takes a while. There is so much fun stuff in it, so many things to comment, etc.

Start with TDP (Thief the Dark Project) to learn about Garrett, and the original story. Then T2, then TDS. Beginning to end, unless they dont care to learn it, then just any fm would do.

The first acquaintance should begin from original games. As for FMs, I think every mission deserves to be played at least one time.

well... the Keeper Training mission in Thief Gold might be a good start...especially if they have no experience with stealth games... (fact is, I've met a lot of ppl who think all FPS games are ultra-violent.. but Thief, thats an exception to the rule -- relatively devoid of violence by comparison)
as for FMs... I think "Father's Pride" is a good one... rather easy, and it was made for a pair of kids...

All For A Nights Sleep. It is short and sweet. Absolutely beautiful mission by Morggan. It is even a go back and play for anyone reading this.

This. I honestly don't think any FMs should be played before all of the original missions have been played. I think some of the suggestions made here will turn off most novice players to Thief unless they already have a good understanding of the gameplay techniques learned by playing the OMs.

.... I think Mission X is probably the best mission you can show in order to introduce someone to the world of Thief.
Wow...I could not disagree more. MX is a treat but it's for the expert thief. I could not even imagine a newbie attempting it and having any fun at all.

I was putting difficulty away when I said Mission X, I should have said it. :p
Mission X is the epitome of Thief to me; great design, great characters, great use of the gameplay, etc. Of course a new player is going to have nightmares if they're playing it, but not if they're watching it.

I tend to agree with Winter Cat and bassmanret; if your friend is interested in playing Thief, start with the OMs. If it turns out they are left wanting much more....point them to Cheap Thief Missions and DL.
Missions to carry on with? I'd suggest any of BBBs - Lady Lisa's Harbour, Mighty Joe Young, Lord Matt or Three Crowns. They are large missions with lots of interesting taffing and showcase almost the whole range of thiefy skills and enemies.
