Painkiller had some great stuff. I loved the fight music in BooH's Looney Park.
Actually Dead City had some great music too- trying to beat that level in 20 minutes to get the card made it feel like a prototype Left4Dead. That shit was insane.
I liked some of SS2's techno (particularly Engineering) hated the rest. Ambient stuff though was great.

Shock 2 music is special for me, because in the game I find it disturbing - the audial environment is very rich of ambient noises and also I have to keep listening if there aren't any monsters/robots nearby. But I listen to the soundtrack outside of the game.

The music from Bloodlines has been growing on me since then, I really must replay.
Hehe, I even included segments of "Deb of Night" radio program in the soundtrack.

Most games feature a blend of everything, so it's going to be difficult to constrain this to any one genre even for single titles.
Classical(ish): Shadow of the Colossus, Baldur's Gate 2, Icewind Dale, Mafia
Techno: SS2, SS1 (MIDI techno FTFW!)
Classical/Synth/Techno: Hitman 2/Blood Money, Xenosaga 1-3, Beyond Good & Evil, Metal Gear Solid 1-3, Mechwarrior 2
Classical/Synth/Rock: FF IV-VI, various assorted good bits from VII-IX, Xenogears, Chrono Cross, Halo 1-3
Industrial/Ambient/Rock: Silent Hill 1-4
Weird Genre Bending Kickassery: Katamari Damacy 1 & 2
And whichever genre the (

Techno / Trance - The (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorhead_(video_game)) Motorhead soundtrack. Nothing to do with the band of the same name.
Classical- Moscow Sympony Orchestra's Outcast soundtrack. My only beef with it is that some of the tracks don't feel long enough.
- Final Fantasy VII.
Modern, Kinda- GTA Vice City. I
am tearing down Miami strip, with my mullet, gay car and 99 Red Balloons blasting out the 8-track. Awesome.
Also, to single out specific tracks:
Course from Unreal Tournament.
Tristram from Diablo.
Hephaesteus from Anachronox.

Yeah, GTA Vice City had great music. In fact I think it was sold to me by Stitch when he said something about chasing someone in a helicopter, firing with your automatic rifle whilst your black sidekick pilots and Blondie plays on the radio.

Hey, I forgot about Chrome. It has awesome music. It's sort of an electronic modernish soundtrack. Think "high tech" and "action". also, has anyone played the game? I heard it was very underappreciated.
I tried to tell people how awesome Chrome was back then but everyone was too impressed by Farcry or something. I'll agree that the soundtrack was well made for it. With maybe 3 versions of each song depending on the level of action you're in.
With hindsight Chrome maybe wasn't all that awesome, but it was certainly alot of fun while it lasted, heres hoping they can get Chrome 2 released.
