Some beta-testers are better than others. Have several, a mixture of players (who will spot game play problems) and DromEders (who will spot technical problems).
Accept that some will drop out.
I´m just wondering why someone offer to betatest and then "drop out" and/or not report back at all  , taffers like this obviously don´t know of the time, effort and anxiety that got a mission this fare, like i sade i´m just wondering :weird:

Not always. Sometimes someone volunteers to test with the best of intentions and then something comes up in real life that makes it impossible - they get sick, have a death in the family, suddenly have a lot of stress at their job - although I'm sure sometimes people also just decide they don't want to bother. I have a small circle of testers whom I use regularly and don't plan ever to use any others since I trust them all implicitly now after several years.

Not sure why you'd think there's any problem with helping him. If he chooses to release another version of his mission, I do hope he gets a couple of people to run through it first.
And he shall. :)

In regards to zip file naming and duplicate downloads, ie not knowing its the same file. I had suggested a while ago when I was still planning to write a darkloader replacement. I suggested we do a crc/md5 or something similar on mission's and you could then just compare them to see if it is the same. I had gone through my missions directory a couple of times and I still have dupes in there due to different naming conventions, versions etc.
I still end up downloading missions I already have sometimes.
I am willing to write such a (OS Agnostic with source)program or we could just use md5sum as I believe it is available for just about every platform. If linux runs on it then md5sum should be available and it is also available for windoze of course.

I wish I had been more careful and had both of My FM's beta tested before submitting them. I've learned more patience, and allow more time in the making
than I used to. I'd rather play an FM without alot of difficulty with the fuctionability of the objects, objectives, ect.
Very Excellent Post!!

I'd like to suggest that after the mission is zipped, authors should open the zip and remove any Thumbs.db files, Paint Sho Pro browser files and so on. They can add a fair bit onto the file size. For some dial-up users just 1MB can be significant.

What are the PSP browser files named? I agree that needless cruft should always be eliminated from mission files.

This thread has lots of good advice for people making and submitting FMs, but now I have a request to make of those hosting FMs:
When you extract the readme files and link to them directly, please remove the email address.
I hardly ever got spam until I released my FM.

I would like to add a request. When you use notepad to create the read-me file, please use the return key. It's very frustrating trying to read and having to scroll and scroll. Maybe your screen is 5 feet wide but most are not.;)
