#1: True Grit (and I'm surprised it's not on more people's list)
Not out in this country yet afaik bud.

I keep forgetting there's a "rest of the world."
Goddamn Americans.

The rest of the world is a lie invented by the Commies.

Despicable Me is good fun but not a patch on Dragon or Toy Story 3.
Upon second viewing, Scott Pilgrim makes it place at the bottom of the Edgar Wright pool so painfully apparent. In fact, it may even not really belong on my top 10 and likely after watching any of the other likely good movies I haven't seen yet (Animal Kingdom I'm watching tonight) it will disappear off. There's a crucial lack of drama to the action, there are no stakes whatsoever and this focus on the fights also detracts from the rather crucial relationship element between Scott and Ramona.
Saw Going The Distance too, it was an average rom-com elevated by some heartfelt central performances by Justin Long and Drew Barrymore (who I usually HATE) and well supported with some ribald and frank humour, which also makes a change to the tired old formula.

True Grit also my #1, though as mentioned before I haven't seen enough 2010 films for that to really mean a lot. Still, so awesome.
And surprisingly profitable. At $86 million it's already the Coens' highest grossing film of all time, and it's only been out two weeks. Which raises all sorts of questions, like:
1. Was it significantly helped by its (inexplicable) PG-13 rating?
2. Are Westerns making a comeback? Seriously, what was the last western to gross a significant amount of dough (Brokeback Mountain doesn't count), much less the $100 mil+ this is sure to make?
3. How old does Jeff Bridges have to get before his career starts slumping?

Never Let Me Go
Soooo bad
I don't normally *hate* movies, but jesus, there was little to redeem this. I guess the acting was alright (ALRIGHT), but as a whole I'd rank it slightly below Human Centipede, which was at least provocative.
I also saw Harry Potter, and although I had no idea what was going on, I didn't think it was too long. Guess that says something about craft, or.. whatever

I saw quite a lot of films this year.
Great
Green Zone MATT DAAAAAMOOOOON. And Brendan Gleeson, who I am a fan of. And Greg Kinnear, who I am indifferent to.
Hot Tub Time Machine
Inception. It's already been said.
Scott Pilgrim. Big fan of the style. Will it hold up to multiple viewings?
Machete. I had no idea what this film was about at all. A friend of mine suggested it and within 5 minutes Danny Trejo had cut a whole bunch of people up and driven a car through a building. Plus a naked woman pulled a phone out of her….
The Town. Saw this when I was in the States killing time before flying back and it was brilliant, a great surprise.
Four Lions
Good
Shutter Island. Despite the blindingly obvious twist, it was a fun thriller. Plus it gave Ben Kingsley some screen time, which is rarely a bad thing.
The Crazies. It may be a remake, but it was still a good one. (Haven't seen the original)
Kick-Ass. 12 year old calling people cunts.
Toy Story 3.
The Social Network. I'm sure they were all dicks in real life too.
Paranormal Activity 2. Creepy.
Unstoppable. Captain Kirk 2.0 stops a runaway train.
Harry Potter ATDHP1
Watchable
Splice. Adrien Brody creates and fucks a monster.
The A-Team. Wouldn't watch it again, but it was kinda fun.
Predators. Ditto.
Salt. And again.
The Expendables. This is becoming annoying.
Buried. Wasn't sure I could sit through 95 minutes of nothing but Ryan Reynolds. Turns out I can when he's being buried alive.
Let Me In. One of the films where you're rooting for the baddie.
Red. If it didn't have Helen Mirren with a machine gun it probably would be in the 'Bad' category.
Tron Legacy. Watchable because it was pretty. The story was utter shit, plus it was essentially the same story as the Tron 2.0 computer game, which was similar to Tron.
Bad
Alice in Wonderland
The Losers
Iron Man 2. Too long and so disjointed. A shame because the first one was ace.
Um…, what
Due Date. Dreadful. I know it was a comedy, but I would like at least some semblance of 'This could actually happen' in this kind of film.

Inception is mainly a technical feat. Whilst it may be brilliantly shot and edited, it is essentially hogwash - and fairly banal when you break it down.
A dream within a dream within a dream where lots of generic action staples, mainly car chases and gun fights, play out. And why? Because one person's company is doing better than another person's company. Weak writing.
Seriously, Nolan may be a good director but he needs to hire a decent writer or adapt material which is of more interest. A masturbatory film which won't stand the test of time, imo.

This coming from the guy whose nickname was a bad joke in the 70s.
