The week Stalker came out, I played it unpatched on a Geforce 6200TC and it was an easy 7/10. Unpatched. Then again I actually enjoy games.
Mods (and patching!) only improve what's already a fantastic game.

Stalker:SotC is the best game I've tried for years. Not one of the best, but the best. Huge replayability too.

@Aja:
First, including timed exclusives is, it seems to me, bollocks. Exclusive means just that, exclusive.
Then everyone needs to take the Witcher off their lists.
I'd give STALKER unmodded an 8 or 9 out of 10 I think, whereas Clear Sky is basically unplayable without mods.

Here's a list without including expansions or the dozens of PC-exclusive adventure titles that I don't really know anything about. I'm also not including stuff that isn't out yet.
Empire: Total War
Dawn of War 2
Men of War
Battleforge
The Path
Drakensang
DCS: Black Shark
Crayon Physics Deluxe
Mevo & The Grooveriders
Quake Live
Cryostasis
Sins of the Solar Empire
Europa Universalis Rome
Supreme Ruler 2020
Spore
Civilization IV: Colonization
Multiwinia
Sam and Max Season 2
Penumbra: Black Plague
The Experiment
Penumbra: Requiem
King's Bounty: The Legend
Mount and Blade
Audiosurf
Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble!
Trials 2
Crysis Warhead
Tank Universal
STALKER: Clear Sky
Wings over Israel
X3 Terran Conflict
Rail Simulator
iRacing
Out of the Park Baseball 9
Football Manager 2009
Fritz 11
And that's just 2008 and the first 3 months of 09. I'm sure if I went back to 2006 and included upcoming 2009 stuff the list would be well over 100 titles, all PC-exclusive and worth checking out at the least.

Seen a couple mentions of Sam & Max here, which is good, but I think I enjoyed Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People more. Never played season 2 of S&M, though.

Except the console "version" of The Witcher is practically an entirely new game. Nice try though.

Maybe you got unlucky with it, don't know, but CS works fine without mods (patched up at least). I think it's a better game out of the box than unmodded Stalker. With that said, I'd still recommend SoC more, because it has better atmosphere all in all.

My problems with CS have less to do with bugs and more to do with shitty design decisions. If you took SoC unmodded and added CS's repair/upgrade/artifacts and the faction wars you'd have a damn near perfect game.
Koki on 8/4/2009 at 12:38
SoC was a torrent of design?
Hahaha oh wow.

The sidequests and such were shit, but the gunplay and the main story thread were great. CS' story was kinda crap, the gunplay somehow got worse, and they made really odd design decisions like implementing nightvision that only illuminates things you can already see clearly without it. Seriously, even the highest level NV in CS is somehow worse than real life generation 1:

Compare that to this, which is basically useless:
