Just recently replayed Starcraft, and even with the severely dated graphics, it was a blast. So, with my computer last being updated in 2004, what's another Starcraft type game that would be equally fun to play? Something from 2002-2006 would be perfect.
I guess when I say "Starcraft type" game, I mean real time strategy, but I'm really not into the diehard resource management sim games like Eve. It's gotta have a decent pace to it so I don't fall asleep. Doesn't really have to have a space setting either, but that would be nice.

Dawn of War. They threw resource gathering out the window in favour of a capture point system. It still has micro-management of course, but the game is far more focused on the combat.

Warhammer 40K Dawn of War is what you want.
Not big on resource management; you gain resources by capturing and holding strategic points.
Great animation and audio, backed up with very satisfying races each with a different playstyle.
The campaigns for Dawn of War and Winter Assault are bog-standard linear fare, but Dark Crusade and Soulstorm both have non-linear campaigns that have a strategic map much like a simplified Total War.
That's the closest to Starcraft you'll get until Starcraft 2, but it's well worth trying Supreme Commander and its expansion, both of which can be picked up as Supreme Commander Gold Edition.
Supreme Commander is a much more long-haul game however with some maps taking hours to complete, but it's incredibly satisfying, especially if you like exploding robot death on a massive scale.
It's also got the best camera in a traditional RTS yet.
Again, resource management is minimal, allowing you to get on with the carnage.

Personally I would steer clear from Supreme Commander. It can be fun, but it can also just be a grind and the different factions are quite similar as far as playstyle goes.

Warcraft II & III are worth a look if you're willing to forego the space theme completely.

Has anyone played Sins of a Solar Empire? I just heard about it recently and saw that it's had good reviews ... although it's more like Homeworld (4x) than Starcraft as an RTS.

Stitch and I did, don't know if many others here tried it out. Great game though.
