I've been playing a lot of Red Faction, Prototype lately, so I'm really in the mood for a good ol' war/tactical shooter. I own all the Call of Duty games and don't consider Gears of War or Halo to be "war shooters". I'd pick up Operation Flashpoint 2 if it were out :(
I've heard good things about Bad Company. Anyone here try it out? Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter had a pretty fun demo, but I hate that the coop is only first person. What are your guys thoughts? Also, cheap helps (Ghost Recon and Bad Company are under 20 bucks).

Stalker, despite its nature as a survival horror/exploration game, has a strong tactical/realism element to its firefights.

Have you considered/tried 'Brothers in Arms - Hell's Highway'? I think 'Hell's Highway' has allready had a price drop or 2.

I'll second Stalker. In fact, I wanted to post that earlier but I didn't know to what extent it would qualify since I have next to no tangency with typical wartime shooters. Either way, the combat has an intense and quasi realistic tactical side to it, and the AI seems to have a high degree of randomness in deployment, while still keeping each approach valid and effective. Effective enough that, discounting Mirror's Edge automated system, this is the most intense action my quickload key has seen in years. But I keep coming back like a submissive whore, it's just that sort of game.

Arma II is coming out soon in the USA and may already be out in Europe (I'm not sure) and some folks like that quite a bit, if you're willing to trade some bugs and obtuseness for a massive open-world experience. Of course, that won't be cheap.
Crysis is decent so far, and at least some parts of it are tactical/war-shooter bits, though it depends on how you define your terms - it's a heck of a lot more tactical than Red Faction, but not nearly as much as Operation Flashpoint. Of course, you need a rig that will run it.
And yeah, Stalker is most definitely worth playing - I had good fun with it, though I admit that the experience didn't really stick with me. I think it probably has a lot of interesting mods now that weren't there when I played it.

Great suggestions so far guys. I played STALKER already though and loved it.
Im thinking of Battlefield Bad Company. I just tried the demo and was shocked to find out it had a destruction engine (though primitive compared to Red Faction). I dig the humor and the gameplay reminds me of Operation Flashpoint (at least in the demo, driving people around, having a smartass squad around, fighting Russians). Looks like it got good reviews, thoughts?

I don't know if anybody still plays it but if you have Half-Life 2 you might want to check out Insurgency.

LOVE Insurgency. Eagerly awaiting NeoTokyo although that's a lot of hype to live up to thanks to Planet Half Life's preview.

SWAT 3 & 4 are fabulous games. Highly realistic. There's zero scripting, events and NPC placements are randomised each time you that you play.
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 1 & 2 for PC. The console versions are completely separate games by different dev studios, arcadey bullshit that ought to flushed out of an airlock.
Brothers in Arms (1): Road to Hill 30 & (2) Earned in Blood. Terrific games with strong narratives, fleshed out characters and great presentations - they are pretty much Band of Brothers: The Game series. They are quite unforgiving and closer to what a PC audience would expect from a sim FPS, despite being designed for PS2 and Xbox.
BiA1 & 2 were all about the tactics - laying down suppression fire (idealy) with your rifle team and then flanking the enemies' position - usually with your assault team. There was no health pick ups or regeneration, aiming was difficult and if squad mates died they stayed that way for the rest of the mission.
I don't care if I'm labelled as hypocrite for this, but I loved
Rainbow Six: Vegas 1 & 2. Out of all the console FPSes, these games are by far a league ahead of all the competition. The gameplay possesses a lot more depth and actually require the use of brain cells unlike braindead spamfests like Call of Duty. The cover system actually works really well and is a great work-around to the lack of leaning.
Every level present all sorts of room for strategic thinking.
A hostage situation in Room #1? Have my team stack on Door A, then I peek under the door with the filament camera and mark targets ranging in priority for the squad to eliminate. Change the Rules of Engagement to return fire only and I adjust my Rate of Fire to fully automatic. Finally I order my team to flashbang and clear, meanwhile I enter through Door B and quickly take down the enemies.

It's MP only, what's the point in even bothering? No one will play it. Even if it did develop a minor playerbase, the servers will all likely be in North America automatically making it inaccessible to a global audience.
