Edit: Solved.

Get a legacy PC and install the original game. That's the purest way to do it.

So I recently reacquired Thief Gold on Steam, and while it does run without modification, it's very stuttery, resolution options are limited, and the videos do not play.
Now I know everyone's going to scream "get TFix!" but hear me out.. while I appreciate all the amazing work that voodoo47 has done putting that package together, we have some disagreements on what constitutes vanilla (meaning, installing TFix with all options unchecked). Using TFix, I still get chatty Garrett, I still get stately looking T2 guard models instead of the classic thuggish look, among many other things deemed necessary to "fix" that fundamentally change the original experience.
Believe me, I would love to use TFix, because I cannot seem to find any alternative solution. DDFix is discontinued, and installing NewDark straight out will break the game. I've considered buying the GOG version, but that's just a leap of faith. What are my options?
p.s. no disrespect to voodoo47, you're awesome
Not sure what you mean about New Dark breaking the game, but the GOG version utilizes New Dark as well.

Not sure what you mean by this, but I have what I would call a completely vanilla NewDark install of TG. I installed it from the CD many years ago, and have updated the Thief.exe to NewDark (1.22 just recently) but play with no other mods, and did not use TFix. It works fine.

naah, he is not complaining about the gold additions, he is complaining about TFix additions. if you have the steam version, try to use the latest (
http://www.gog.com/forum/thief_series/universal_update_for_thief_gold_now_available_information_inside/post25) GOG patch 1.22 (essentially TFix lite with no resource fixes), this should bring you close to what you want (just remember, you need to run the original steam thief.exe at least once before applying anything). not 100%, but that's as good as it gets without a legacy pc, or dealing with DDFix.
and yeah, the game is completable with raw NewDark as well, some things won't work, but they will not stop your progress.

Is there any other way? Yes yes, I *still* play Thief and all the classics on my good old WinXP/crt. Sometimes being poor keeps you rich.

XP? not hardcore enough man.
tell me when you don't need to type -lgntforce or fuss with video codecs
You'll need 98 for that. As I recall though, back when I had XP, all I had to do was set the compatibility mode for the installer, and after that everything worked fine

Awesome, this is exactly what I was looking for. Worked perfectly. You even remembered the higher poly characters so I don't have to fuss with cam.cfg. Why not promote this as TFix Lite?
it would create unnecessary confusion, and the demand for such a light version is almost nonexistent - I think you are maybe the second person ever that has complained about the fixed models (remember, LGS themselves have admitted that they have screwed them up, and released a proper set later, the very one that is now part of the base TFix patch). most people are perfectly fine with better stuff you know.
