Okay.. first of all. I'm a Christian. This guy is a friggen nut job. WE all had him pegged as a toothless hillbilly 6 months ago. So I'm not surprised he went ahead and did his little public pissing contest. The guy is an idiot. Who in their right mind would do something like this after the office of the president personally asked him to think about it. Regardless of party lines.
Setting that aside however. Seriously Islam? Seriously??? You're going to get your panties all twisted up over this meat head? UN staffers killed... the people there who are trying to help the country. At one point the man in charge of the UN complex that was attacked was spared a death dealing blow with a club simply because he recited a passage from the Quran, keeping the attacker at bay.
Say what you will about little boys trying to act big (jones). But this kind of reaction is lunacy beyond comprehension.

In a nutjob vs nutjob world it's exactly what's to be expected.

There are over a billion muslims in the world today. The vast majority of them responded to the Quran burning incident the same way the American public has - complete and total indifference.
The riots in question are occurring in an especially unpleasant country, one which has plenty of violence and has been the subject of a foreign military occupation for a decade.
Despite that, they still didn't riot until a local politician started using the event as a way to fire up anti-foreign sentiment. This is hardly "OMGBURNEDQURANTHEYMUSTDIE". This is just typical ugly politics, the kind you get in any nation that's been occupied for years - especially when it wasn't a nice place to begin with.
Purely political. Actual religion isn't much more then a contributing factor.

It should be noted that the reason it is under occupation is because of it's harboring of dangerous elements exporting intolerant violence and had repressed it's own people more so after the current occupier helped it to defeat the former one. Perhaps that was in your definition of unpleasant country but the ideology of the region goes hand in hand with it's warped definition of religion which it seeks to spread at gunpoint or did before occupation. The Taliban extends beyond the country and is a movement beyond merely political.

I have to clarify, when I mentioned Islam, I didn't mean the entire religion and all of its numerous sects in one lump generalization. Re-reading it came across that way maybe. I'm just talking about the views of each individual person as they heard the news. Each individual person should be responsible for their own actions. I'm a Christian and my religion is being attacked every day from nearly every angle. If I see somebody burning a bible I don't go apeshit on the general image of a group of people that were involved. Whether they find the act completely appalling or they dismiss it entirely, surely the people nearest you that have nothing to do with those idiotic few, should not be punished (read: Murdered) for it.
It's like these people who are all "hurrdurr take that Japan, Pearl Harbor yo!..." As though I have to pay the price for something a relative or fellow countryman did decades or centuries ago.
Political influence or not. It would take a hell of a lot for me to kill somebody, with my bare hands no less. Not some rhetoric from a politician and a backwater hick being racist.

The Japanese should wear some cosmic blame, even today, for being indirectly responsible for Michael Bay making that terrible fucking movie.
(Bay will get his when we invent robots and they exact revenge for Transformers)

We also have our part in this religion of peace, killing Muslims since the crusades!
