Hot on the heels of Bethsoft buying the Fallout IP comes the opening of their (
http://www.bethsoft.com/bgsforums/index.php?showforum=33) Fallout 3 Forum.
And it's Marvellous. Brilliant. Phenomenal. 4000 posts in the first day. The 10 second tubgirlings and goats'ing from the Codex crowd, the rampant dumbfuckery and blatant trolling, the desparate attempts at moderating, the tortuous reiteration of every single Bethesda/ Fallout 3 argument ever created and perhaps most miraculous of all a bit of genuine discussion.
How long can the fun last?

Fallout is one of those mythical games that appears on Best Of lists all the time and I've never even whiffed the game personally. I must check it out sometime, but with my current gaming habits that means probably late 2010.

Their bloody great games. Even Fallout Tactics (the pc one) is really good, though that one was more squad based (ala XCOM) type combat. Nothing quite like those game anywhere else so far.

i have to agree, though i've never gotten far in FO2. and i haven't finished FOT.

Wow. Ok, but I'm gonna stay away from that place. I am a fan, but I have certain antipathy to generally uncivilized Fallout fandom.
Brings back memories... it was summer '99, I got my first PC, borrowed Fallout from a friend and it changed my life - it got me addicted to CRPGs! I remember that I saved the game after killing every single small rat in Vault 13 cavern at the beginning - that much I was afraid of the life of my character!
I started FOT two times and abandoned both campaigns after some time. It's a good tactical game, but it's linarity and lack of developed story never managed to appeal me for too long. I think it was more similar to Jagged Alliance than X-COM though.
I wish to have one more F2 campaign sometimes... I never been a pornstar in New Reno before. :p

Their forums are in dire need of 'ttlg moderation' : GET OUTs, OnionBob image posting and GBM philosophical rants would make it a much livable place.

And teenage love problems, you forgot.
Remember, press version box of Fallout : BOS was full of fluorescent condoms.

Yes, the new F3 forums are a wonderful collection of internet fandom. ;) Somebody should make a snapshot of it and give it to new internet users as a primer, so they'd know what to expect. ;)
My special favourites are those people who can't wrap their brains around the idea that Bethesda can make a game that is not Oblivion, up to and including the thread "So who will Patrick Stewart voice?" ;)
I liked the cake analogy, tho... Very fitting.

Even as a long time Fallout player, it's now gotten to the point where I'm much more interested and amused by the rabid, idiot community whining than I am in the game itself. I probably won't even buy Fallout 3, honestly.
Sort of like Duke Nukem: Forever in way.

They're decent.
That's all. Humor-filled, pop-culture-refrencing, enjoyable trek through a post apocalyptic wastleland. With wretched combat. And buggy. At least the first one.
The second one seems like a much better game, but I do not like the constant reminders that my home is in danger; if there's a time limit, come out and tell me so, otherwise, get the hell out of my face. Perhaps once I've beaten it, those will go away, but at the moment I'm having too much trouble surviving the first few quests to think that far ahead.
Also: Never, ever, ever give an automatic weapon to a teammate. You
will die. Possibly with an absurd death animation.
