"Hey I'm Ian, I like adventures."
"Hey, come with me, and you can take half the loot."
"LOL, ok!"
Ian is basically walking firepower, and that's it- a way of making the early game a bit easier. To be fair you should compare characters in Fallout 1 with its contemporaries rather than with the better modern titles (KOTORs, Bloodlines), which had resources dedicated to them that the Fallout team could only dream about- not that F1 doesn't compare well with some modern RPGs anyway. And Fallout 2 is better, certainly in breadth if only by opinion in depth.
Plus, you haven't finished the game yet. Several fairly memorable characters are found towards the end...

Come on, you can't say you didn't shred a few tears when he ran through that force field...:(
I can't play the game without him. Each time he dies I have to reload :p I normally keep him dosed up with pyscho, and I use more stims on him than anyone else hehe.
I've never actually completed the game tho, due to showstopping bugs
every game I play.

Every character with talking head had his own personality. The facial expressions, attitude, voice acting, style of speech everything made them unique. And don't tell me that old Harold wasn't a deep character or I'm gonna plant a tree on your head and only then you'll be a deep character.

They basically killed the character off in Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, which is another reason to hate that game.

that's one of my favourite quotes. it got deleted from the wiki page on the FO series because it hits too close to home and there's a bunch of NMA-inhabiting wikinerds on there.

The irony is, as I was looking at the topic on NMA that the quote came from in 2003, they have the same exactly complaints then against a Interplay and Black Isle project as they do Bethesda. The insanity hasn't been diluted over time.

Isn't it a bit hypocritical to call the NMA crowd "self absorbed" when we here can be just as fanatical? I seem to recall a few discussions on whether or not the dagger was a thieves weapon, and the topic of rope arrows/climbing gloves, and we also can't forget about losing skills in Invisible War.
Hell, even now a few members at the Bioshock forums here are up in arms about the fact you can't kill the little sisters accidentally.
Let's also not forget the rumors of EA doing another System Shock. Would you sit idly by if EA were to turn it into a simple shooter?
And just to clarify, I'm not part of the NMA crowd, but like them I still don't like the direction Bethesda is taking my favorite series. Does that make me a bad guy?
