Bethesda haven't yet done anything to
earn any respect, either from the hardcore or the more casual fans.
Shame on them for byuing the license and their intention to make a sequel, eh?

Given the attitude of much of the existing Fallout fanbase (NMA, etc.), I don't think that would be possible or advisable. At best you'd maybe get a candid post from one of the devs followed by a bunch of idiots telling him/her to commit suicide.
The Irrational thing works because there's respect on both sides. That doesn't seem to be the case with Fallout.
Devs like Damien 'Puuk' Foletto, Chris Avellone, and JE Sawyer regularly communicated with the NMA crowd when they were involved in Fallout-related projects.
You also have Section8, one of the devs for Fallout Tactics (!), who actually became a very respected member of RPGCodex. Hell, even David Gaider (of Bioware) frequently posted on RPGCodex. None of these guys were cursed out, mailed feces, anthrax, or anything of the sort.

This fuss about little piece of music is just ridiculous.
People are simply making an observation. I'm sure people would notice if a website for a Star Wars game featured some retro-sounding sci-fi arrangement with cheesey synthesizers and theremin. Sure, it's sci-fi, but it isn't Star Wars.

Fallout is sublime and I consider it one of the finest games I've ever played, but this is ten years later. To expect anything even remotely resembling the original games is ridiculous right now. I just hope they manage to capture the feel.
But really, I just want another good post-apocalypse RPG. :(
Oh, and I don't put any stock in the teaser site at all. They're probably just taking the piss with the EPIC FANTASY SCORE; it means absolutely nothing.

You're speaking my mind.

I'll second what foldy said. By and large the fallout fans were reasonable towards and supportive of both Van Buren and Tactics (at least until its release; it was Interplay's most pre-ordered game, ever). Yeah, they loathed FOBOS from the beginning but then it did do the double of killing VB and turning out to be pretty much exactly as shitty as predicted. In any case, they should have earned Bethesda's respect by the simple fact that they bought the game and forked over their money, have discussed, modded it and in many cases 'loved' it (for want of a better term) for years, every bit as much as some here 'love' Thief or System Shock.
There are a host of reasons why the fan's reaction to Bethesda has been less than positive, but the main one is Oblivion. I didn't love or hate Oblivion, but it is an atrocious match for Fallout and 'Oblivion with guns' would be a travesty. It's plastic, generic and a poor RPG partly redeemed by looking pretty and being moderately fun. Contrast the Bethesda response to what was wrong with Oblivion- ie. there's nothing wrong with it, at all- with Ken Levine comments here or Jon Chey's Gamasutra article wrt SS2. That alone is part of the reason why discerning people (fapfap) have more confidence in and respect for IG, they admit to mistakes.
And while I've said it before I'll say it again, the reaction here to some of the relatively minor changes in TDS (even its name, ffs) makes complaints about NMA/ the Codex just a touch precious.

Yeah, I'm ditto with the NPC interaction worries. They can change the combat and the can mess with the music and they can make it first person, whatever. But if Fallout interaction is the same as Oblivion interaction - which usually is "I get a whopping 1 dialog choice, and even that is written without any personality" - then the game is just fucked. Linear Fallout isn't Fallout.
Gestalt on 4/5/2007 at 20:16
I should have specified Bethesda rather than Fallout developers in general, I guess. I just don't think Bethesda communicating directly with the fanbase would really help anything at this stage. Everyone has their guard up.
It might become a viable idea if the teaser trailer is well-received, but I don't see how it could end well as things currently stand.

If somebody dislikes the music, he could do himself and everyone a favor, buy rights for another Ink Spots vintage evergreen and offer it to Beth so they can put it on the teaser site for common peace of heart. This fuss about little piece of music is just ridiculous.
We are talking about the
ambient music, genius. (

What with the financial success of their (post Daggerfall) kiddy RPGs, nobody doubts Bethesda's capability of buying rights to any number ever sung. That's not the point. Some of us just want Mark Morgan do the music in Fallout 3.

If Thief 4 were to miraculously come out in 2014, would you not want it to resemble LGS Thief? If i'm not supposed to expect so, why call it Thief then?

With all due respect,
genius, you're basing your opinion of the ambient music in the game on nothing more than the music on a teaser website and the fact it's been written by Jeremy Soule.
That's like... well, it's just a bit premature.
You never know, it might be different, and it might be.... better?
The point is you just have no idea yet, so stop judging stuff that you haven't heard or experienced. Actually, you can be as biased as you like, but you just look like an over-indignant twat for sardonically mocking BRnumbers.

Is there more? Where? The trailer coming out in 31 days? Well, it isn't out
now. What do you expect internauts do with their time?

Who doesn't want that!

Actually there's more:
(1) Bethesda
blacklisting fansites (RPGCodex and a Star Trek fansite i don't remember) when they had the temerity of pointing out that their game was shit (Star Trek), and that Fallout 3 might very well end up being Oblivion with guns and desert.
(2) Peter Heines stating "we will do what we do best".
(3) RPGs like Oblivion with laughable NPC interaction and major focus on XTREME grafix.
Fans are seeing Bethesda in contrast with J.E. Sawyer and Black Isles who had the guts to actually discuss changes and defend what they were going to do (even if fans disagreed). Fundamentally, they were still making a game that was going to be highly faithful to the original titles.

Do you have something going on with BR#? Can we take this outside?
