MechWarrior (
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/07/09/whirr-stomp-resurrection-mechwarrior/) is back!
A full reboot of the game universe is in the offing, developed by Piranha Games. Multiplatform, but the success of things like MechAssault and Steel Batallion make me optimistic that the game will still deliver.
One thing I do like the sound of is the prospect of gaining more skill with a mech as you use it and a range of mission including recon etc, both hopefully allowing even light mechs to remain useful until the end of the campaign.

Confirmed for PC and 360, it's a reboot of the franchise. The philosophy of the development seems to be
"This is not your father's MechWarrior." Powered by Unreal Engine 3.0. Developer Piranha Games and license holder Smith & Tinker are currently shopping it around to publishers.
They currently plan to have:-
* An emphasis on urban combat (i.e. using buildings as cover).
* 4-player co-op.
* Weight class-based gameplay. Each class of mech plays a specific role and has a unique play-style, none of that "pilot a shitty mech until you can afford a bigger and badder one."
* What sounds like the pseudo-RPG progression that's become popular in the FPSes these days.
This is all subject change based on their publishing partner's demands and assigned budget.

This new MechWarrior is set on the planet Deshler in the year 3015, and places players in the role of Adrian Khol, a wayward nobleman who prefers partying and shirking responsibility over his training and studies. However, when House Kurita launches a massive invasion to conquer Deshler, resulting in the death of his entire family, Khol discovers a purpose to fight for.
There are ambitious plans for this new MechWarrior. The original MechWarrior games were limited by technology; now with modern computing power, the developers are hoping to really capture the sense that you're piloting a giant, walking war machine in the middle of an incredibly dynamic battlefield. While the two companies are still talking to potential publishers that could determine the final production budget, Weisman and Bullock explained that they plan to have a full single-player campaign, as well as support for a four-player co-op campaign, and a full multiplayer suite.
One of the key features is a sense of information warfare, using everything from unmanned drones surveying the battlefield from above to light scout mechs relaying information to teammates. Weisman and Bullock both explained how they want every class of mech to really matter in this game; it's not just a race to the heaviest, most powerful mechs. The designers want to reward you for picking a mech and sticking with it -- you will gain experience and become better at piloting your chosen mech, and that will translate into better accuracy and damage with weapon systems. This way, a player could specialize in a light mech throughout the entire game if they choose. It also means there are multiple playthroughs with different mechs. The developers also said the game will change based on your chosen mech class.

I used to love playing Mechwarrior 2 (and who didn't have at least 2 copies bundled with something), but I'm not convinced I want to get back into a big stompy robot any time soon.
I managed to convince my little brother at the time that I was 'playing' the cinematic intro to Mechwarrior 2 by moving the joystick appropriately, and then told him he couldn't play when it finished.
I think he cried. Sorry, little bro.

I've been trying to play multiplayer with my friends, but the godawful browser system makes it impossible. I hope they at least preconfigure it to allow online matches without needing to download 1837571 patches and mods.

Why rebooting, anyway? I don't recall Mechwarrior featuring such an elaborate plot or anything. I mean, is it too risky nowadays for a game to be a sequel? After all, it is essentially MechWarrior 5. Also, since it's going to be released on Xbox 360 as well, does that mean that it will end up as a first-person MechAssault?
Finally, is it me or the mech pilot in the trailer really sucks? I mean, come on, a Warhammer losing to an Atlas...
