Oh yeah, you were the guy arguing that the Star Trek franchise still possessed vitality and the new cinematic reboot was unnecessary!

Why rebooting, anyway? I don't recall Mechwarrior featuring such an elaborate plot or anything.

I don't think they're rebooting the whole franchise, but probably just ignoring the events of the previous games. 3015 is pre-Mechwarrior 2 at any rate.
Scots Taffer on 10/7/2009 at 00:44
hey I've never played a mechwarrior game but that trailer owned my shit entirely
so is first-person/third-person perspective robot destruction mayhem the go? I had a feeling it was more "tactical".
JohnnyTheWolf on 10/7/2009 at 01:00
I was referring to the games. I never cared much about the Battletech universe itself and I don't think you need to when it comes to the games. Most titles are stand-alone anyway, so you don't need to have played MW3 and MC1 to understand what's going on in MW4.
But if MW5 is taking place before the original MechWarrior, why don't they just call it a prequel? That would at least make sense.

If you had bothered to have read IGN interview, you'd know that they're aiming for fresh start from the gameplay stand point. Why they've set it before MechWarrior 1 is clearly explained, they want Mechs to feel like scare resources of some value. I.e. Mechs might be so rare on planet Deschler, that your starting one may've been in your noble family for generations and thus is valued as a prized heirloom.
They talked having to salvage wreckages from the battlefield as a big deal, you having to scavenge enough parts to just keep your mech in working condition between engagements.
Next time read the material provided rather than leaping to conclusions and looking stupid as a result.

After all, it is essentially MechWarrior 5. Also, since it's going to be released on Xbox 360 as well, does that mean that it will end up as a first-person MechAssault?
Christ, it was only a matter of time before the OMG MECHASSAULT PART 3 guys would rear their heads. Why can't we have a PC centric forum without dumb fuck NMA-esque blind elitism?
The game is still in EARLY IN DEVELOPMENT, how about you give them the benefit of the doubt until the fucking thing is released? At the very least wait until there's some professional reviews OF THE FINISHED GAME floating around before even opening your mouth on the subject of a game's worth.
In that aforementioned interview the developers mentioned that they feel confident that they can deliver a proper MechWarrior title on consoles without making it a brain dead arcade-fest where you run over power ups.
Also have you played any of the Armored Core or Steel Batalion games? They're proof that console centric mech titles can be just as complex their PC counterparts.

Finally, is it me or the mech pilot in the trailer really sucks? I mean, come on, a Warhammer losing to an Atlas...
It's a fucking cutscene, who gives a shit? I recall that the pilots in the opening cutscenes for all of the Activision MechWarrior, Heavy Gear and Battlezone titles getting their arses handed to them as well. If anything they're staying true to the series legacy.

Can't wait. I loved MechWarrior 2 and 4(especially 2 which I must've passed at least 5 times). Great stuff, hopefully this one won't disappoint.

Did you? Because they clearly say it IS going to be a reboot/re-launch from a narrative standpoint.

It's definitely a re-launch. I mean, twenty five years of any soap opera, especially space opera, can become pretty difficult for new players to become involved in. We wanted to take the opportunity to re-launch, or as Russ phrased it, redact the universe. Introduce it at the kind of accessible level it was when we first introduced the universe twenty five years ago. This is not unlike what we've seen most recently with Star Trek, Iron Man, Spider-Man...All franchises which, as they reach out to a new audience, need to create an accessible origin story for their beginnings. So that's where we wanted to go to, it's right at the beginning. Actually, the story starts just as Hanse Davion comes to power, so it is just, as you said, at the end of the Third, right at the beginning of what will become the Fourth Succession War.
First page, last paragraph.
As for the gameplay reboot, I just don't get it. So, basically, instead of having huge robots shooting at each other, we'll have huge robots shooting at each other, except that there'll not as many of those this time because it takes place in the past. Then, I suppose that MGS3 is a gameplay reboot too, as it forces you to rely on late 60s equipment.
Seriously, I'm not against what they're going for, but I just think the word "reboot" is inappropriate.

Although I love the sound of that, I bet in the end it won't be much different than the repair system from previous installments. Otherwise, it would be too frustrating for casual gamers.

And you thought I was aggressive.
Actually, I personally never minded (nor played) the MechAssault games, considering they were meant to be played on a Xbox controller. But all the MW fans I know told me it's shit. So, yeah.

There is no Bioshock.

The series legacy of having silly opening cutscenes?

I didn't give that much thought, because you know, it doesn't matter at all. They're still working within existing Battletech universe continuity. That universe is so big that it allows them a lot of creative freedom.
It's not like with the 2009 Star Trek film where they flicked a switch and set it in a parallel universe with an alternative timeline to every TV show and film that had come before.

Exactly. In this case it's just arbitrary jargon, that's entirely not worth losing sleep over.

That's my point, it's trivial nonsense that's not worth devoting any thought towards. That teaser trailer's only purpose was to build hype amongst gaming audiences and to act as a proof of concept to help sell their game to a publisher.

I would have called the classic MechWarror games ( 2 - 4 ) more simulation than tactical. If the gameplay is anything like the trailer I will be excited.
If its a 3rd person action game. I wont be there.

But is it Games for Windows?
