Yep. Sure, they simulate some sort of ecology and have relatively open levels, but as soon as they were acquired by 2k the goal went 'THE MOST EXICITING IMSIM EVER' to '...shooter 2.0'. And as others have said, Infinite further stripped every remaining bit of good out of the series.
That said, Buried at Sea is my favorite BS title. It's like they waited until the very end to get the gameplay somewhat right then said 'ok that's it! You got a taste and now we're done!'. But I know there's no way a cashin sequel from a random dev is following that blueprint, so I really don't want this new game.

I think by that point Levine was like "meh fuck it, we're doing it 100% my way for this".

Infinite was basically "Call of BioShock" in terms of its dumbed down gameplay. Fuck that game!

Hey froghawk,
I skipped Infinite, but now I'm wondering if I should give Buried at Sea a go.
The RPG-lite systems in Bioshock didn't do much for me. They were just an extra chore, especially "research", and I never felt like I was doing any sort of character building. So I won't miss them if they're gone.
I didn't really enjoy the combat either. It was too arcade-like, just a shooting gallery full of power ups. But I did like the setting of Rapture. How would you compare the gameplay to Buried at Sea?

While I'm not froghawk, for me the big difference was that Burial at Sea (or was it just Part II?) allowed for stealth, which immediately changed the game from a straight shooter into something else. None of the Bioshock games were really immersive sims; IMO they were competent shooters with an interesting setting, but the setting would have been great for games that allow you to do more than just shoot crazy people in the face. By offering stealth as an option, Burial at Sea allowed for less twitchy pacing. I wanted to *explore* these places, not run through them like my life depended on it - which it usually did.

Yeah, it was just part 2. It didn't just allow for stealth- that was pretty much the only option. It felt almost more Thiefy than Dishonored gameplay-wise. In terms of story, I felt it not only brought Infinite's convoluted nonsense in, but also brought in a whole mess of continuity errors all under the "it's an alternate universe" umbrella. The wandering around bits of part 1 were cool, but the shooty bits mainly served to remind me of other, better Bioshock games. Part 2 was strong enough in sneaking that I was able to ignore the disaster of a story- also
that scene made me really uncomfortable. You know the one. I know it was meant to, but still... ugh- perhaps a tad gratuitous?

Thanks. I think stealth would be welcome in Rapture, especially if the levels are open enough for multiple routes and approaches. I also wished for more exploration in Bioshock, and less pressure to move along due to respawning enemies.

I couldn't get past how bad the shooting mechanics felt and the feel of the weapons in the first game. Calling it a competent shooter feels like a stretch...
