But Targa's shafts are used a lot! And these shafts are exactely like my idea.
But, it's not so important.
I have another idea: Modifying the bitmap file it self.
Doing that the file have it height doubled. The bottom of the flame will touch the middle of the height. Under it: Empty and totaly transparent surface.
It may work.

Because they were created before Dark had the ability to render these sort of things properly.

They were also created by Vigil, not Targa. And they are also generally used at around 15-20% alpha which makes the fact they're crossed flats less obvious.
