A tiny aspect of the subject of how the original T2 worked and how FMs work as related to alerted AI and their ability to be bjacked to sleep with ease...
True to my tag name, I like to bjack everyone I can to get them out of my way. Ghosting is not really my thing, but I try from time to time, and then FWHACK!
99% of all FMs allow one to bjack alerted AI with ease, unless they have the super helmet. Not so for T2! I have not played a regular mission in T2 for a long time, but I played Masks (one of my favorites of the game) yesterday and today. Man that chapter is harsh! Any AI that is alerted, even when you are in full dark and the AI is 10 feet away, he sees you and attacks! I forgot all about that. My apologies to all FM makers I have ever criticized for having too sensitive guards! The original is tougher than I remember! I cannot just jump, sound, alert, wait, bjack in the dark...
Maybe it's the new dark and the latest tafferpatcher? I don;t remember the guards in Masks being so so "jumpy". I also recall being able to out-do the bots by making them kill themselves by shooting at me close range near posts, doorways and whatnot. An error... An error... fails to understand... creation... Not so much this time in Masks. I was able to get rid of 2 bots on the 3rd floor this way, but man it was a chore. In many FMs, bots can be dispatched at ease with that technique.
While my sign-on says I am from 2010, I had lost my earlier account here and really have been around a few years longer. No matter, the point is I have been playing this game for a decade and learned something new. WOW :joke: Maybe I am learning some wisdom in my older age. Tread lightly and enjoy the games from those that provide them for free.

New dark does affect some things in older missions. I remember in A thief 1 mission Lorgans Web (I think?) where I could get the AI to chase me into the water and drown themselves. With new dark they stop short and don't go in over their head. I haven't checked out the original T2 to see the changes. I may have to give it a go.

Now you got me playing through Masks again using New Mantle to do things never intended.
From the starting point I immediately climbed the wall, jumped to the upper patio area, knocked out the guard then broke the window to get in. The masked servant came running and actually ran out the window I just broke since the doors were locked. I have never seen that before! It couldn't get back in, although it did walk back to the same window.
It never fails to amaze me how often I see new things in a game I've been playing for almost 14 years. :thumb:

I was wrong, it did get back in through the same window. :laff:

I know! It is fun to try out the new things in the older games. I bet Kings Story would be 100% easier in the beginning mounting those rocks/trails. As for T2 original, I use it as a benchmark to make sure my system is working OK. If an FM is really super slow, I try Running Interference and see if I can move normally and game play is OK. If not, I know something is really wrong with my system.
I had a nice older 7600 GT series EVGA mVidia card die on me about a year ago. POP! About 6 of the capacitors blew their tops. It lasted about 4 years. I am now running the on board GeForce 6400 and it kind of sucks. No problems with the older FMs, but the last 48 Hour contest stretched it pretty thin. I'm pushing it to run 1920X1200 native and it is not too happy. I have to tone it down to 1024*768 to get the game working with a decent frame rate.
For my main computer, I switched to a Mac about a year ago. I tried using Parallels and Windows, but could not get the keyboard and mouse to work right. I use F6 and F7 a lot and could not get that to work at all on the Mac. Also, the mouse was all whacked out. I decided not to "pollute" the Mac with Windows and uninstalled Parallels.
I could just go spend about $300 and upgrade everything and get Win7... but this system is still chugging along well enough.
Lastly, I just played Chronicles of the Metal Age from 2006. The AI behavior was strict, but still much easier than Masks. I'm also not sure if I like how the AI can now climb desks, ledges, and walk through water that they would never have done before.
