The Guardian is a piece of shit rag too.
He's not an assault on anything, he's just tedious. He was funny for a brief period in the early '90s, but his need to pitch himself as some kind of upper-middle class alpha male drowned most of that out.

ah yes but think of it as more a state of mind

As much as I hate the Guardian's loony lefty hand-wringing bleeding heart wank texts it is a necessary evil and I'd be sad if it went.
Plus they do have a remarkable amount of quality commentators like Brooker and Mitchell.

Is there a UK paper that is centre-left or left without the hand-wringing style the Guardian seems to have more and more? In theory the paper would be very much in line with my political views, but these days I find that it gets buried too quickly under the pinko liberal equivalent of "Won't they think of the children?!" And I'm saying this as a bonafide, card-carrying pinko liberal. (And, apart from anything else, they gave
Aliens: Colonial Marines 4 out of 5...)

That's the first thing I noticed when I was trawling the reviews. I suppose it still makes sense to pay off major, mainstream media outlets first and then focus on the hardcore gamer press.

The Guardian fluctuates a lot in its quality. Sometimes you can get some really good, thought-provoking journalism out of it, other times, they seem to be trying to be a left wing Daily Mail and just writing articles designed to attract attention rather than provoke thought.
I'd actually recommend The Independent over The Guardian, but I don't really hold with mainstream press too much as its for-profit agenda means that it will always place the need to cater to a demographic and its advertisers as a higher priority than reporting facts.

I believe the grauniad consistently makes a loss and is subisidsed by other publications sold by the same group. If they are trying to run it for profit, it appears to not be all that successful.

Oh agreed. Fully objective newspapers aren't going to exist so we need a spectrum.
Really I was just using the term as cheap and covenient label for people of certain political and social stances.

Thread derailed so I don't feel bad for encouraging it. Anyway, I think that news media should be all over the place. We should have left-wing, right-wing, religulous-view, and everything in between. Then you can take an educated world view, painted with a broad brush and make up your own mind.
And Columbus Dispatch...:tsktsk:
We used to have a morning and evening paper when I was a kid. The Citizens' Journal folded (lol) and it has been a one-paper town since. Last week they went to a new format. It is like 1/2 the size it was. Not thickness, but actual square inches. It is the size of one of those grocery store sale flyers now. Really bizarre. Check it out.

That would be great if it weren't for people (e.g. my parents) who just read THEIR paper (e.g. The Daily Mail) and believe it to be the truth (so many arguments about why everything can't be blamed on immigrants taking jobs). All papers should be criticised every time they deviate from the facts in order to push an ideology or increase circulation.

No.
Because some people need to be lead to the right place and this approach does what faetal describes - allows people to read myopic junk that doesn't deserve a place in any right thinking newspaper, nevermind being thought in the first place.
I'm all for diversity, but pure stupidity should be burned and cleansed with frothy fevour and passion.
Take this amazing level of idiocy.
