I was messing around in T2, when I found that if you hit the block key with the blackjack out, Garret moves it into a blocking position. Two questions:
-Does this happen in T1? (I loaned it to a friend and haven't got it back yet)
-Does it actually do anything useful?

Yes.

The same as blocking with sword. For me — nothing.

Holding the block button only blocks one attack. To block another attack, you have to release the block button, then block again, and so on, and so forth. I use it quite a lot myself. It's not very good though, not like in Oblivion where you can just constantly block attacks, without releasing the block button/key.

You can parry with a sword, if you really want to fight this way, and iirc you can even parry by turning left or right so that the blade stands straight up to your side. Simple, but somehow more intelligent than some stuff in real "fighting" games.

Yeah, I've always liked Thief's combat system.
Cool to know the Blackjack can block - that'll definately come in handy if I want to start playing with minimal reloads...

Unbelievable! I thought everyone knew that blackjack can block. I noticed it when playing the game first time, but wouldn't guess that this will be great discovery. In blocked position blackjack can knock out any AI just like when one normally releases it. But that works only in T1 and T2 Demo and as this trick is related to S&R it could be implemented in T2.

I did not know this. I'm going to get back to playing Thief soon, maybe I will find a use for this during a moment of desperation!

Very few people use blocking at all.
