Blackmail evidence... Why Garret didn“t use it ? - by Gambit

Ok, so Garret gets a viktrola with evidence of a Sheriff and Karras conspiration to kill/enslave every single never-do-well...
So he tries to blackmail the Sheriff. Doesn´t work out.
So why can´t he blackmail Karras himself ? Or just leave that innocent viktrola inside Shoalsgate Station evidence room... Or give it to the Hammerites, they would have a party with that thing...
You could do a lot of PR damage by having a recording of a religious leader bribing the City Watch authority.

Because up to that point, his biggest concern was his own demise. He wasn't going to Blackmail the Sheriff on behalf of the citizenry. When he decides to trail Mosely, he's still trying to find out who wants him dead, 'cause he hasn't figured it out yet. It isn't until he and V. work together that he discovers how big, and of what nature, the threat is to himself and his lifestyle...and The City.
From the briefing for Blackmail: "Truart was acting for somebody when his cronies ambushed me back at the Crippled Burrick inn... I bet he'll be happy to tell me who that was."
From the briefing for Trace the Courier: "Things are getting very complicated. Even if Truart's dead, my problems are far from over, and whoever hired the Sheriff to kill me is still out there.
The keyring I found in Truart's house belongs to Lt. Mosley of the City Watch, but it turns out that she has an alibi for the murder itself.
Still, she's probably neck-deep in this whole mess. I don't know what's going on, and I don't like that. So I started following Mosley. I knew sooner or later she'd have to tip her hand and to contact her friends. And sure enough, she just left the local Watch station, well before schedule, carrying a letter. This is my chance. If I can trail her without being spotted I should be able to find who's on the other end of this little conspiracy."

Nice spoiler titles there :P and surely this kind of discussion should be in the spoiler thief forum. I know it's an old game, but I've already had the major elements of the first 2 games spoiled for me by randomly seeing things like this and am hoping every last detail is not spelled out before i get there.
Mind you it is my fault also for not having time to play them recently :( and being stuck ghosting / all looting thieves bloody guild haha :p
tschüss :)

Good point. Never mind that he doesn't know Karras is out to kill him right after he got it. Later on in the story he *does* find out that not only is Karras trying to kill him; but he's after the whole city as well.
Remember the cut scene where Garrett and Viktoria are trying to decide on a plan? Showing that Viktrola to the nobles and the authorities at that point would likely have been enough to bring the plan to its knees.
That is something of a plot hole isn't it? I guess it can be explained away in a couple ways. Perhaps Garrett discarded it after Truat died? That seems unlikely. Garrett isn't the kind of guy to pass up a potentially lucrative opportunity like that.
Or perhaps they didn't use it out of fear that Karras would release the rust gas before they could track down each servant? That seems likely enough, but it should have been mentioned if that's the case.
Now that I think about it, why was Karras so intent on killing Garrett in the first place? Sounds suspiciously like a cheap plot device. Though I can't remember the exact justification given in the game. I remember that Karras made Garrett's eye in hopes of gaining an ally. I guess that works, but I don't know. Seems shaky.

I think he wanted him dead simply because he knew Garrett posed a great threat. After all, as a former Hammer, Karras knows that Garrett brought about the Trickster's demise. That's why Karras wanted Garrett as an ally, at first, because then he could use G's skills. Often in classic stories, the villain not only hopes for an alliance, but also a more convenient way to keep an eye on the potential threat. Garrett's rejection of the offer--he probably just ignored it, or said no thanks, and went off to play with his new eye--was when Karras would have decided Garrett was a pure threat, and sought ways to kill him. Karras also gets off on killing as many birds with one stone as he can. His schemes are like the workings of a clock, with many gears and mechanisms in motion.
By the way, once the thread was moved to the spoiler forum, I removed the SPOIL tags from my first post, which were there before Dan Knott read this thread--although, I realize a link to this thread remains in ThiefGen.

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to vicitimise this thread, I just see spoiler stuff being talked about in thiefgen a lot. Probly you should ignore my post if anything, as to be honest what else would people talk about in thiefgen.
So yer, sorry :o Ignore what I said before :)
edit - it was more of a call for people to choose their topic names more carefully, yet still alerting to possible spoilers :)

I understood ya, man.:thumb: I just think my removal of the SPOIL tags made it look like you were reacting to more than just the first post. :o
No worries.

As far as we know the Viktrola only has Truart's voice on it, not Karras. If Garrett tried to use it to bring down the Mechanists the authorities would need further proof that Truart was speaking to Karras and not some renegade group in the order. He would need proof that Truart was speaking to the Mechanists at all.

When the stolen recording is played, we only hear one line. Are we to assume that it has the whole thing and what we hear is limited just to save us having the entire conversation playing?

As has been pointed out, really only Truart would've been in immediate trouble in the minds of the nobility, as the whole purpose for the recording was to give Karras the power to create a scandal for Truart--leverage. The City Watch was in on Truart's street-scum cleaning. One guard (in an unused conversation) appears to nearly say "street-scum" but stops himself and says "street...people." Hagen liked Truart's plan, that's a major reason Hagen was Framed! An investigation would've taken awhile, done properly. Questions about how a Mechanist device came to be used to record Truart's voice would come up, and that might've eventually led to suspicion about Karras. Again, assuming that a proper investigation were to take place--which is more possible with Mosely in charge after Hagen's framing--perhaps too much time would pass, and perhaps Karras would have to just send his Masked Servants to the Noble's mansions to detonate them. Not as effective, but Karras would have something up his sleeve.
