(
http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/diabloiii1.jpg) This Diablo III Pic is beautiful.
I'm not sorry to see them take a new slant on things, Diablo II in particular suffered from the mobs blending with the background, especially in the Jungle levels.
Diablo I's gothic theme
was fantastic. But hey, let's move on.

It seems to me the problem is less the color palette and more the models and environments just looking kind of like WoW.

Well there's always mods, for single player at least. Did D2 or D1 allow any visual mods in multiplayer btw?
Also I have to say that most of the effects in fan screenshots can be done with DirectX 8 level effects, certainly not too demanding for todays machines.
I bet we'll see some dll mods like (
http://operationflashpoint.filefront.com/file/Kegetys_DXDLL;49296) DXDLL for Operation Flashpoint some time after D3 is released. DXDLL for example has all effects that are needed for those fan screenshots in it runs on Geforce 3 cards :p.

Yeah, I think the Blizzard guy in the interview might've been exaggerating just a bit regarding tech limitations preventing the visual style desired by dissatisfied fans.

Magic and happy rainbows! Oh boy! Nothing says gothic and hellfire like rainbows, right?

The bit about darker lighting being impossible on most machines was just really odd.

The problem is having no neutral colors and everything having to be at the very least a more or less pale shade of blue, green or purple, aka 'wow gayness'

Personally.. I think fans of any art of any genre should not be the ones to determine how it progresses.
Just because you're a diablo fan.. regardless of how die-hard, does not mean you should dictate what the game "should" be.
You have no idea what the game "should" be because you didn't make it in the first place. If blizzard wants to take it in this direction, thats their choice wouldn't you think?
Might just be the way I look at things. The masses are asses.
Make what you want to make Blizzard, if it sucks I wont buy it. end of story.
I loved D1 but never got into D2 much. Most im just hoping that the game is fun. If its fun, then I'll buy it.

Nobody expects Blizzard to bend to their will just because they're a fan, people just bitch with the hope that if enough people complain, they'll change it. If a company will listen to a few people acting as focus testers, it's not a stretch to think that they might change their minds if the majority of the fans (read: potential customers) disagree with them.

The thing that I find funny is the fact that the Diablo series already has a perfectly huge following.
This isnt T: DS or Tribes: Vengeance where they have to sacrifice things to expand their audience because the core audience is not big enough.
If they made a freaking Diablo 1/2 hybrid lovechild and sold it just being a graphical upgrade with some new areas everyone would be happy. I can understand not really wanting to do that, but people wouldn't complain.
Why is it that people manage to make awesome sequels to things that I don't like. They can only make sequels or movies that are ok makings of books if the subject matter is something I dont like. If I like it, it will end up getting butchered.
Thats not to say that I think D3 will be bad, I'm not really a huge D2 fanboy but I did have fun playing it. I'll certainly give it a try.

I call bullshit on a lot of his excuses. "Not possible with todays tech"? Please. If it isn't possible for hardware today to run a game that looks
exactly like some of those hypothetical shots, it sure as hell will be in two years time when the actual game is released.
Also, where he talks about why they won't have a light radius in
Diablo III:
"I think people really remembered it in like one or two places where it was prevalent in ‘Diablo II,' but forget that it almost didn't exist in the other 90 percent of the game." Seriously, can this guy think we're that stupid? There were actually in-game items which would make your light radius larger or smaller. Why would they even bother with that if it only showed up in 10% of the freakin' game?
His reasons for why it looks like WoW are pretty pathetic too ("oh, everything looks like WoW nowadays anyway!"). Seriously, what the fuck? It's as if Blizzard has turned into a bunch of complete dumbasses the last few years, specifically since the release of WoW. :nono:
