I think the art style of D3 is different than both World of Warcraft and previous Diablo titles. It doesn't really look like WoW, which is characterized by a very colorful comic-book style of art in the early and late phases of the game. It never really looks "gritty" no matter how hard it tries in certain dungeons and areas. Fortunately Blizzard generally tries to make WoW look surreal or otherworldly, and this works fairly well in most cases, especially in the expansion pack areas.
Diablo 3's art to me looks as if they tried to blend the style used in Diablo 2 with the color palette used in WoW. I think that the criticisms often leveled at other games of the type--such as Final Fantasy XI--as being "too much grey and brown" has caused Blizzard's art department to react in a manner very typical to Blizzard. They make knee-jerk overreactions to every little thing, which is one reason why WoW is such a huge mess.

personally I think I'll get D3. probably not when it comes out. but sometime down the road when they've knocked at least 20 bucks off the price of it.
I also find it really interesting that a great deal of the community that is complaining about the colour pallette in D3 are the same people that complained about the gothic semi-monochromatic environments of Jericho. Yeah. Jericho was awful in terms of storytelling and variation of gameplay. But as awful as those fatal flaws were the biggest complaint I heard over and over again was the colour pallette of that game.
Personally I liked Jericho for what it was, It has a very well optimised engine that can run at nearly maxxed settings on a P4 with 512mb of ram(like COD4) with the look of a quad core game on DX10. And the colour scheme didn't bother me one bit. So why are so many people who are complaining about how D3 looks way too colourful and not, truthfully, bland enough for their tastes, the same people who complained because Jericho was too bland looking?

Personally I wouldn't piss on a copy of D3.

I'm not overly annoyed by the colour scheme, its just adds to the feeling that D3 is going to be so painfully average in every way possible.
"Hey look, our game is fun, it has nice colours".....:nono:

Yeah, I quite like the colour scheme as it is. I'll be looking out for this one with interest, if they can fix the more glaringly horrible parts of DII's gameplay.

in terms of colours (and probably gameplay)
d1>d2>d3
