What are people's views on an option to increase the blood and gore created by shooting / killing enemies?
Fanatix on 10/7/2001 at 01:47
Increase it? Nah. What's the point? It'll just make it more like a Soldier of Fortune kinda game. Actually, I would rather have it decreased, if anything.

(bad) It would probably encourage people to shoot, or give them the idea that that was the point of the game.
(good?) it would highlight the difference between stealth and killing. Increasing the visceral impact of shooting the occasional enemy when you are being stealthy.
(good) It would make the world seem more concrete and realistic . At times Deus Ex felt slightly fake?

Games aren't meant to be 100% TRUE TO LIFE. If they were, they'd be too much like life, and that isn't fun. If it were fun, then we wouldn't be behind the PC playing games as a form of entertainment, we'd be out enjoying something that pertains strictly to life itself. I don't know how many times I have to tell people this, I wish a developer would come in here and tell you him/herself. GAMES, ABOVE ANY OTHER ELEMENT, ARE MEANT TO BE FUN. THEY AREN'T MEANT TO BE 100% REALISTIC.

course it's no fun if a game is totally and completely 100% realistic. but most players wouldn't notice anyway.
a good idea would be to increase the possibilities for the player. more blood and gore, but as well more stealth and also more talking and adventurous ways of playing. everybody should still be free to play the way he wants.
another thing: in dx, some situations were impossible to come by without either shooting or stealth. (eg the a51 was really hard to do in stelth). not hings like that anymore, please (like missions where you had to kill somebody, eg the dealer in the subway station).
if the story requires it .. ok. but i wouldn't appreciate it.

If anything, i would prefer more true to life death animations. That would kinda solve the problem on all levels, cause it's not really gore, but it kinda is. At least more than, drop-to-your-knees-and-fall-flat-on-your-face deaths.

Well, maybe I'm morbid but Deus Ex 1 doesn't handle bodies too well. Not only are they frequently ignored by NPCs, but they just stay in the same position as you throw them off that tall ledge (rigor mortis I guess :-P). Hitman has some pretty realistic animations for bodies (though I don't know why everyone moves their shoulders while talking in that game). Also, you can drop an unconscious body off a cliff and put three bullets in its neck, and it would still be "Unconscious." Perhaps their status should change after taking a certain amount of damage (falls, weapons, etc.)
Also the blood decals disappearing seemed pretty unrealistic, when you fight the troops in Paul's apartment and clean out the hotel it looks like a slumber party :-P instead of total carnage. I realize there are performance and memory issues with lots of decals hanging around, but it at least should be a configurable option. I don't think a dead body would generate a pool of blood every single time you moved it either. Aside from that, I believe Deus Ex handled gore pretty well.
In addition, you never had to kill the dealer. You could pay El Rey and the dealer to get both LAMs in the subway, or you could stun him, get the zyme without cost for the junkies, and the Rooks will still give you the LAM. You can move the body if his comment about "finishing the hit" troubles you :-P.

Regardless of what you guys say I still think the Blood & Gore should be more realistic, if I take a shotgun to someones head they would look a little different than the game portrays. I mean Kingpin was pretty bloody but was still more realistic than DX. Also whats with the red semi-transparent triangles that came out of you when you got shot? You don't have to go overboard (Kingpin) but realism in that aspect is a plus.

They'll do it. Maybe or maybe not go against spector's game philosophy, but they'll make the game gorier because the major mass will want the extra eye-candy(if you can call it that).

Alai,
Not they won't. ISA is comprised of intelligent gamers that make immersive simulations, not some Quake game. You've got alot to learn here. Let me repost something for you and PowerCrazy, since you must have not read it ealier.
