The further we get from the NOLF games and Tron 2.0, the more I suspect that Monolith doing 3 games that were that great was a massive anomaly.

Indeed, Renz. On a whim, I started it up about a month ago and had a blast over the next few days playing it. With mouse-look the difficulty feels much more balanced and the level design it still some of the best ever for an FPS. Why can't someone make levels like that in a modern engine?
Renzatic on 13/8/2012 at 04:00
Because of modern gameplay standards. They're built to keep the action flowing, keep things cinematic, without risking the player getting stuck or frustrated like they could in older FPS games. It's all about player convenience and enjoyment before challenge.
The upside is no keyhunts, and it's always boombastic. The downside is it's all straightforward, and a ton of atmosphere has to be sacrificed to keep the pace up.

Oh, I know that silly. :) I'm just lamenting the fact that not one single developer, even supposed old-schoolers like the Hard Reset devs, has carried the torch for that kind of level design.
Renzatic on 13/8/2012 at 04:40
It's cuz they ain't got that mad oldschool style skill, yo.

I may not have given a damn about the RoTT remake, but Blood? Hells yeah I'm onboard for that! :D Great protagonist, awesome enemies, cool weapons, and yes, the leveldesign. I think what impressed me most at the time was how well all the levels fit together. You'd end one level by jumping onto a train, then the next level would be on the train while it was moving, then the next level started on the train which had now crashed into a building. The levels in most other FPS's at the time were just completely separate dungeons which didn't have anything to do with eachother. Not even Duke3D's levels hung together as beautifully as Blood's.
And kudos to Jace Hall for updating and bringing the game back for free. :)
