jtr7. Have you ever considered - rather than penning one of your Great American Novels - that you just bring your thoughts into summation and simply say "Thief 1 and 2 were good the way they are. Deadly Shadows was a regressive step back."
You happen to be wrong on both counts, but at least you would spare us the tedium of parsing your needlessly verbose walls of text. You want to play Thief 2 with better graphics. We don't. In the same way that 9-year-old girls in 1995 wanted to hear Hanson's "MmmBop" thirty times in a row, while others moved on to better music by the time the second chorus hit.

I simply have not played any game where full body awareness was any more immersion building than a floating pair of hands.
Interesting. I'd go the other way, and say that I've never played a floaty-hands game that succeeded at immersing me as far as character goes. Every time I look down and see nohing but my blob shadow, I get sucked out of the game world.

Body awareness is a gimmick, it adds little more to gameplay than eye candy and it's just another case of turning games into more of a cinematic experience where the player gets to go..ooh ahh while they watch their on screen counterpart do cool animations.
Logically then, most animations* and most of the level geometry (excluding the floor) are gimmicks as well. They don't add to gameplay, they're just there to look good.
Obviously that's an absurd argument for including body awareness, but don't discount it just because it's not necessary to gameplay. All games include plenty of extraneous elements. This is obviously a more controversial element to some other accepted norms like animations and walls, but for some people it might be almost as essential.
*By animations, I mean that guards could simply use different static poses to denote things like 'running', 'searching', 'shooting bow'. Melee combat would require moving animations, however.

Listen to the man.
EDIT: I can't believe I got sucked back into this :p. Ah well.

Captain Spandex: We did say that, have said that, will continue to say that. And the response is a crazy "Why why why?" every time. Dolt! Pay attention so no one has to repeat themselves. Cause and effect. Shaddup and stop asking why. Liking T1/G/T2 better doesn't have a DAMNED thing to do with rejecting body-awareness other than the crap BA has led to to undermine several positives. It's like the law of diminishing returns.
Listen to the man? Listen, man, the burden of listening is on your side, always has been, and will continue to be. You have cleaved yourselves off from the rest, and you should never be surprised at the backlash for trumping up corruption of a unique genre unto itself. Listen and act like you understand when forming your comments, and posts will be much smaller.

jtr7, I'm mostly in your camp on this one, but please calm down. Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't mean they are a lying corrupt bastard.
You're hurting your own cause here IMO.

Listen then.
Next time someone says they don't like the idea and gives examples... don't act like they said something else altogether. :tsktsk:
Screw off, Briareos H. [35] You're not helping either. At least you've stepped forward and counted yourself amongst the Butchers (of what I and others are communicating when I'm not setting off alarms in your room cause you're asleep, and what you would do if you could to "fix" Thief).
You guys want it your way without good enough reason, and have given off-the-wall, deflecting, 'tarded responses presented in all seriousness, which blows my mind (all over you), instead of you directly tackling the opposing arguments with a sense of the real world. Your points-of-view of our comments deserve to be treated as cartoonish and with disrespect until you stop acting like real life doesn't exist in this dojo. Wake up and the nightmare will end!
I will not take credit for crap you pull out of your ass in my name.
Stop acting like you don't know simple sentences, or have never heard of this, or don't believe in that, or think anyone's saying what you confabulated, so no one will feel like repeating the same damned thing for the thousandth time, baffled at your blindness.

Is this a "Zealot Rampage Of The Year" contest, or did I miss something?
jtr7 on 17/10/2009 at 09:09
Nope. But it looks like I've won the award for it.:laff:
It's a natural embarrassing tendency for people to yell at the deaf and at those who don't know the language when trying to get something across.
Just cuz no1 would listen to our side and made up lies. :(:(:(

Would it not irritate you if someone mocked your words line by line, skewing them until they were offensively unrecognizable, and called you a zealot Republican for defending your "vision about what a good sneaker
should look like", because it fuckin'
matters to you? You farted on me for little reason because your ire was up. Crank your irritation and bafflement up to 11 as a dozen persistent A-holes deride all that's good about TDM and tell you how to "fix" it, with ideas that would undermine or hamstring what you believe it "should look like". Tell me you don't understand the emotion,
regardless of how you would respond.

And again: EXPLAIN HOW THIRD PERSON VIEW WITH A USER CONTROLLED CAMERA EFFECTS LEVEL DESIGN. You can't because it's BULLSHIT.
As has been stated in this thread before; one of the side effects of 3rd person is you usually need to have higher ceilings and in order for the camera to sit just above and behind the avatar. This means less tight spaces, less claustrophobia and I think if you look at TDS you'll see the effect in action.
What exactly do you do in the industry?
