I just bought Amnesia off Frictional's store (no free Steam key! aw! but never mind, I still loves ya, Fricsy!), so I kinda don't want to get into any spoilers.

Aw, comeon now. That guy has to be a putting us on. There were more than a few points in the game where I'd do the "WHOOOHHOOLLLY SHIT RUN RUN RUN" thing, but it wasn't scary to the point where I'd completely lose all composure and go into crying fits.
Is Amnesia scary? Oh yes. Is it so scary you will literally shit upon your draws in abject terror? Not quite so much. Or at least it wasn't for me.
Though admittedly, I am the stoic type.

So I checked it out anyway.

Ok so he freaks out, then runs into a loading zone, calms down a bit and the starts shrieking again after it's loaded. Surely monsters don't follow across loading zones? I think he knows this and is putting on an act. Noone can be that huge a pussy.

On that subject, instead of getting the demo (which I hear mangles things somewhat) I thought I'd check out let's plays of Amnesia to see if I would like/be able to stand it.
Probably a bad idea with this sort of game, but this one is pretty entertaining.

She's a proper scaredy pants, for a horror devotee, but it seems genuine.
(I stopped after a little while, in case I get it. But nothing had really happened by then. Reviews and general chatter had twigged me to the water monster pretty well already so there seemed a good place.)

I recently played the (
http://gatestoaesgaard2.webs.com/) Gates to Aesgaard mods for Oblivion - they're crawls with barely any story, they seem a bit unbalanced and the pacing is quite off sometimes. However, they do have some very nice(?!) Barkerian gore and hellish landscapes.
Gates to Aesgaard's pretty shit, go play (
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=13714) Dungeons of Ivellon. There, I've completed my mandatory quota of recommending it for this month. I'm actually replaying it now myself, just got to the dungeons proper, that's to say where the poopy starts hitting the fan.
Oh, and definitely get (
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10763) Darnified UI to minimise your HUD to your liking, it helps. The only things I have right now are the names of objects, which I've moved from the centre of the screen to the lower right corner (that takes some .ini editing), and I've set the status bars to only fade in when below 40%. Nothing else on-screen.

Actually, that gets me thinking whether it was a design decision to not have monsters follow you through loading screens, it's perfectly doable.
At any rate, I'm probably gonna end up watching a let's play for this, I might be too much of a pussy for this game by the looks of it. Still, staged or not, I thought that video was kinda funny. I've only ever once vocalised a scare from a game, and I'll have you all know it was
manly baritone "fuck!" at a superb random encounter with a Bloodsucker. I still hold that as one of my finest moments in gaming in general and emergent play in particular.

Already did. Ivellon's the overall much better mod of course, with some pretty creative ideas (
love the wielding options for the bastard swords and the open/closed helmet especially), but I just didn't find it scary. I guess there was too much humour in it for that. Aesgaard, while relying mostly on gratuitous gore, has some genuinely creepy stuff going on.
Pretty much the first thing I do whenever I install Oblivion.
