The way I understand it, GOG games are wrapped in versions of DOSbox that have been customized specifically for each game, so are much more likely to work than trying to use DOSbox yourself.

*Shrug* I received a Steam key when I bought my copy directly from Frictional. I doubt that it would've been an advanced pre-order only deal.
All my invoice has is the serial number, which doesn't activate on Steam. I don't much care, really, but it would've been nice to have for the heck of it.

Of course it is. DOSbox and hardware have come a LONNNG way since I tried getting it to play nice 5-6 years ago, and this version just works. I don't have to tweak the shit out of it, just to find the one magical setting that is playable.

Be nice if System Shock 1 would get the same treatment.

Even with tweaking i doubt it would run that well. It can run ok but you get a lot of slowdown. The best way is to run xp (dual boot if necessary) and then run dgvesa. I wonder if that would work with blood also.
Only problem there is corruption above the videos and freezing when switching to a video. This isn't a huge issue but it's a bit annoying. I wonder if i switched out my x1950 for my old 9600 if that would help - cos i did have it running without even dgvesa at one time.
In terms of midi you can get it sounding really nice with soundfonts too, just creative's xfi midi drivers are fucked beyond belief. Timidity can make it a bit more stable but i am no expert on it.
I just wouldn't recommend dosbox for those type of games really.
Also ss1 is rather apt for this thread, as playing on 3 combat difficulty really ends up rather challenging (until you find the restoration room). Deck 3 is quite scary for the first time. I would say the game is perhaps more scary and difficult than ss2, mainly cos the player feels a lot more helpless.

I never actually use MIDIs for SS1 anymore. I just have Winamp running in the background (controlled via my keyboard's media buttons with a plugin) with another plugin playing single songs on loop, and I use Chicajo's mixes. His alternate Executive mix works really well for the Flight Deck, particularly with that side-story with the Reaver and the trapped survivors. Between each deck theme I stick the Elevator music in on the playlist.
