The German-owned supermarket, which has 500 stores in the UK, is selling frozen reindeer steaks at £5.99 for a 350g pack under its premium 'Deluxe' brand.
But vegetarian campaign group Viva! has slammed the move, claiming that the ‘Rudolph steaks’ ruin the spirit of Christmas.
Spokesman Justin Kerswell told The Grocer magazine: ‘Lidl is destroying the magic of Christmas by selling dead reindeer.
GIVE ME A BREEEAAAAKKK!!!

He added that reindeer are often herded by snowmobiles and caught using lassoes, which ‘causes them huge distress’.
Of course it would be less distressful for the reindeer if they spent their entire life in crowded sheds like all those Christmas turkeys and hams

You don't eat horses, you don't eat dogs, you don't eat cats (and yes I mean the animals you perverts) and you don't eat reindeer. Some things just aren't done, otherwise what's the point of polite fucking society?

Not a venison fan, then?
Lean and full of meaty goodness. :p
I think it's more the fact that the vegetarian protest group has incredibly shortsighted nonsensical arguments, here.

You missed "people" off that list, dethtoll, or did you...?
We do have some pretty arbitrary boundaries between what we feel comfortable and uncomfortable putting on our table. I would be happy to give reindeer meat a shot - I can't see why it would be much different in taste and principle to venison. However, you'd have to be pretty unfeeling to serve it to a young kid who still believes reindeers are "magical creatures" around Christmas time.

You don't eat horses
Of course you do, it's great meat, light and lean and more subtle than beef.

Yes, I wouldn't eat cat or dog, but reindeer aren't PETS, they're practically game. And I love horses but don't mind eating horse meat, maybe I'm just cruel and insensitive. (Probably wouldn't eat one I've known, though.)

You could say it's pig or cow :p
Seriously, I don't mean people
should eat reindeer (although it's much much more ethical meat than pig or turkey), and wouldn't feed it to a kid who still believes in Santa, but come on - demanding to stop selling reindeer meat in grocery stores? I can't roll my eyes fast enough.

I'm not surprised at all. Most vegetarians I've met cannot justify their stance, it's all emotional frothing with very little logic involved.
Thirith on 17/11/2012 at 12:44
Unless they're proselytising, though, why would they have to justify their stance? (Apart from which, I am a great eater of beef, so to speak, but I'd find it relatively easy to come up with reasons to be a vegetarian - it's just that I like the taste.)
Vasquez on 17/11/2012 at 13:55
Yeah, if it's a personal choice, there's no need to justify, or at least "because I feel it's right" should be enough for anyone who wants to know.
But the fanatic branch of vegetarians is as annoying as any other bunch of fanatics.
