For the record my last couple replies were a response to the idea that enjoying certain games is somehow indicative of belonging to a particular social class, as it's not a big deal to me if people have different opinions than I do in regards to consumable entertainment.

To the people who didn't like Borderlands: What exactly are you hoping to achieve in this thread?
Very good question! I hate it when people come into threads for games I love just to shit on it as well. But in my defence I've actually played the first 7-10 hours of both BL1 and 2, so it's not like I haven't tried getting into them. And, y'know, I didn't
hate my time with these games. I played them in co-op, some of it with Sulphur who at one point managed to turn two cars into (
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=13904083) some kind of autoerotic artwork. We had some laughs, but after a while at all just started feeling very bland and I kinda gave up on it. But since a lot of cool people seem to really like these games I've always felt like there must be something I'm missing. It's not like it's in some weird genre I don't like either. It's got an open world and shooting and driving and insane quests. I love that stuff! So why isn't BL doing it for me? What do you people SEE in these games that I don't?

The truth, man, the truth.

BL and BL2 were fun. I rather enjoyed the mindless play, but it did get rather boring after a while. That was even after the first play through. I even own a claptrap I bought on sale for 5 bucks.

I think a lot of the appeal comes down to the humour, and that's a very subjective thing. The base gameplay is, as has been pointed out, very diablo-esque and people expecting a straight up FPS are going to find it a bit of a grind. People often complain of 'bullet sponge' bosses and when you have a game that's filled with standard enemies that can take whole magazines to kill, then I can appreciate some people will find that tiresome. On the other hand, those wanting more of an RPG might find it a bit lacking in those elements. There's very little character customization, little in the way of class-specific loot and only one active skill per class, which can feel rather limiting compared to the likes of Diablo or Titan Quest.
For me, I'm an RPG whore, so anything with xp, levels, unlockable skills and coloured loot is like a shiney to a magpie. It also helps that in BL2 they fleshed out the characters a lot, bulked out the cast and had one of the best villains in modern video game history. Personally I think Handsome Jack is up there with SHODAN, only he's more of an arsehole.

Oh yes, thanks for reminding me. The damn loot gathering and inventory management! That's something I deeply dislike. I like scrounging for supplies if it's a game where resources are scarce, and every little roll of duct tape you find is a blessing, like in The Last Of Us or State Of Decay, but in BL where you can walk into a room and pick up 10 weapons and then have to start comparing stats to see which one you should keep it's just deathly dull. And it's made even more dull by the fact that you don't really need the better weapons, you can simply go with the crappy ones because even if you die in a fight you respawn right away so you can just grind your way through the whole thing. The whole incentive for finding good weapons is not because they'll make the fights more fun, but because they'll make the fights shorter and thus less boring.

I'll give you the inventory and interface was a bag of shit, they did a much better job with the sequel, far easier to compare loot and manage your inventory. I'd disagree that newer weapons don't make any difference, there's no fun in winning a fight by gradually wearing your enemies by attrition. I had fun trying out different elemental types, mixing and matching grenades and such. Plus you get the wild card weapons that have unexpected effects, like shotguns that fire rockets, or bullets that fly in a corkscrew pattern (Ok, the latter might not be very useful, but again, that's more to do with the game's style of humour and, again, not for everyone).
Judging from what you're saying, you found the fights boring because they were taking too long, but on the other hand you said you didn't bother getting better weapons which made the fights long and boring. I can't help thinking that you kinda sabotaged the game for yourself.

It actually does matter how well you perform in combat because when you respawn enemies are given full shields/health. It's not like BioShock where you can whittle away at something inbetween deaths.
