"Every single weapon is procedurally generated," says Simon, picking up the reins from his colleague. "Weapons are cobbled together from different pieces of technology, so you can have a melee weapon that's a cross between a meat cleaver and a chainsaw. We use lots of different components for weapons that can be amalgamated in different ways, and each component brings with it its own set of pros and cons. No two weapons are ever the same."
"If you want the shotgun from Doom, you can find it. If you want the shotgun from Half-Life, you can find it. Whatever gun you want, you'll be able to find it. Each style of gun will use its own ammunition."
I think it sounds pretty awesome :D

Sounds like another game people are going to going to get their hopes up for, and be sorely disappointed when it it comes out. I skimmed through the article and it just sounds like of all the available weapon types, there will be minor color-coded variations of each one. The whole thing sounds very "gamy" to me. If you're trying to make a believable world, don't tell me I need a "level black" gun to defeat the "level white" enemies. I don't doubt there was a very good reason why role-playing games choose to use statistics for descriptors. Then again, the plot sounds like the usual cliched sci-fi fodder: hunt for the ancient technology that will save the galaxy. :eww:

So weapon 1 = [metal plate of str + rand(5) ] + [stick with poo of smell + rand(3)] + [Color: Red(rand(255)), Blue(rand(255)), Green(rand(255)) ]

The fact that it sports something like 4-6 player co-op should interest some of you here.

Though I'm not sure how they'll pull off the color coding successfully, I actually kinda like the idea of having unique weapons featuring differing stengths in a wide list of properties. In current games it's hardly ever a real choice which weapon to ditch and which to keep.
In a coop situation this could well prove a nice point of deliberation, who would be best fitted to draw the attention of.. while the rest..
I do have a hard time imagining a combined melee and ranged weapon. This would only really work if people were allowed to carry only one weapon at a time.

I expected people to be a bit less conservative on a forum like this.. Now, go play Doom..
What kind of _weapon_ is "metal plate" btw, you really have no idea what you're talking about, do you? "stick with poo of smell"? Either you're 10 years old or you just dont want to be taken seriously. GG. There are almost limitless options on how to make a weapon look, i'm glad you're not a game dev if color values and random str or agil are the only things you can think of.. you've played too many bad/generic RPG's me thinks..
I think it's a great idea. But then again, i'm a total loot whore. I'm gonna love being able to find a personal favorite amongst all those weapons + it will always be fun to loot, never knowing what you're gonna find..
Co-op is always fun too, and I always appreciate developers that are trying to set new standards (yes, even if they fail in the end). Any dev that is going for a really open-ended / non-linear game is good in my book, its those devs who push gaming forward.. GearBox has done some good stuff before as well so i'm farily optimistic. I dont see any point in being a total pesimist just because they wanna try something that isnt Doom1 all over again..

600,000 weapons?
I bet 10 dollars that when this game comes out, there will be only 20.
