Hell of a lot better. The guns, especially, feel like weapons instead of toys, although I agree that the sound effects are pretty mediocre for a lot of them.

Level 22 right now, playing with 3 of my buddies. Can't comment on how playing single player is, but online co-op is an absolute blast.

Well, I've just seen my first sign that the random weapon generator can put out some interesting stuff.
A shotgun who had a power listed as "Holy Crap! It shoots rockets!"
Unfortunately, it's level 22 and I'm level 19, so I haven't tested it, but if it doesn't actually shoot rockets, I'm going to be pissed.
And yes, this blows the shit out of hellgate.

While it's a safe bet to say you do not play borderlands for the plot, the ending of this game is straight up WTF city.
Oh no, they stole my vault key! Blue electronic lady tells me I have to hurry, if I don't open the vault, like now, it will stay closed for 200 years, and I'll never find the riches. Run fast, oh wait, they got there first, and they opened the vault. Guess I'll have to kill them all to get the riches for myself...
but wait, what's this great treasure in the vault, that was so important I had to make sure it didn't stay locked up another 200 years?

WTF? I could've just not done fucking anything and left squid thing in the vault, and the world would've been fucking fine. OK, fucking electronic lady thing, your ass better explain why the fuck it was so important to let out the damned monster and kill it.

Well I finally got myself a copy of this. Comparing the single player experience to Hellgate ones I actually find Borderlands worse due to a couple of things, but pretty much similar (why the hell are there only 4 classes and why the hell is coloring your shirt considered "freedom to customize your characters looks" beats me). Haven't tried multi player yet, though I wouldn't be able to compare that one since I never got to play Hellgate multi. Borderlands does seem to shine a whole lot more in multi (from what others have said), something that Hellgate just smashed into tiny pieces of shit.

Again, I'm not really sure why anyone would want to bother playing this alone. It's clearly designed as a co-op experiance. I'd imagine playing solo would be about as much fun as playing Left 4 Dead by yourself.
Anyways, beat the game with a couple buddies around level 36. All the comments about the ending being garbage are 100% justified.
It's like the devs spent so much time building up to the uncovering of the Vault that they forgot to make the Vault itself or something in it. So they took the Watchmen approach. "Here, have a giant squid."

you don't play alone in L4D, it got bots. They could have put in the other characters as NPCs but that would have been too much work I guess.
And I played it last night with 3 other guys. Well, guess, the game just throws 3 times as more monsters at you or just scales the endboss 3times harder, what a surprise. But it does not change anything of the experience, tactics (lack thereof) or "intelligence" of the mobs/enemies. Having fun with my friends is a clear given (they ARE my friends) and not an accomplishment of the game imo. So, nah, I am staying away from it.
