you are judging the game
One thing: Do explain how it's wrong to become more or less anticipatory as the game development progresses.

Because the art direction is a part of the style. Having text popping up to announce every hit is part of the style. Having cel-shading is part of the style. The game's art and interface are as much part of the style as the gameplay. I find it extremely unlikely that the game will have an atmospheric, moody style from what I've seen of it, and the trailer sure doesn't dispel my suspicions.
The first screenshots showed off gritty realism, the newest trailer shows a cartoony approach, and the developers have specifically admitted that the style of the game shifted. That's plenty enough evidence.
So
what? You don't even know how it'll
play. It could turn out to be pretty fucking dark and atmospheric. After all, who the fuck said comic books had to be cheery and uplifting? And as has been pointed out, Bloodlines had hit counters and yet I don't see anyone complaining that those hit counters RUINED THE MOOD OF THE GAME.
But aside from that, are you seriously saying you'd rather have YET ANOTHER game with "gritty realism"?

You're right. I don't know. But I'm taking a guess from what I've seen (comically oversized muscly men, silly font) that it's not going to be a dark and atmospheric game. I may well be proven wrong. But I'm not getting my hopes up because it looks to me like there's the distinct possibility that it may be a cartoony fragfest.
And I really hope that the trailer is not at all indicative of the final product.

For a sci-fi Mad Max? Yes.

You're asking me to disregard the trailer on the off chance that it does not in any way represent the final product. I know that trailers are often gross misrepresentations of the product, which is why I'm entertaining the possibility that the game may be what I'm after, but I can't just ignore the possibility that it's exactly what the trailer suggests.

Oh right my mistake. That's a wonderfully original idea. Makes you wonder why nobody else has tried it.

I can't recall any major FPS titles set in a wasteland with heavy vehicle use.

What the fuck does that have to do with anything? The new art direction appeals to him less than the old one. He never actually said it would make the game
universally shit, just that it would be less likely for him to be interested in it, nor did he make any comments on "originality". Give it a fucking rest.

I'm not the one complaining that a style that departs from the standard from the Real Is Brown, Darker and Edgier, etc. etc. is somehow less interesting.
Tonamel on 26/7/2009 at 21:35
He's not saying that either, deth. He's saying "I want A. It looked like it was going to be A, but now it's looking more like B. I don't really want B. Oh well."

You know, I hadn't watched the trailer up till now.
Jesus fucking christ, who decided they should make fpsrpg set in the world of 'Fist of the North Star' minus the 'tatatatatatatatata'?
They haven't traded from cliche brown and gritty to something new, they've just turned it into typical japanese bullshit. Anime stylings, big flashing level up and damage counters. It's a white haired pretty-boy boss and a ridiculously lame 'friendship saves the wastes' away from being a typical squaresoft game.
