It's been more than 12 hours since I woke up and found out that just about all possible shit has been thrown on the fan. Stupidly took a taxi cab across town to get to work since ALL public transportation was shut down. Shortly thereafter even the taxis were shut down. Came home about 2 hours later since just about every business in the greater Boston area is shut down. This is some unbelievable GTA 5 star manhunt, and even from a relatively removed and plenty safe location (about 1.5 miles away from the neighborhood in Watertown where the intense perimeter search was conducted, and just recently appears to have been ineffective) it's exhausting and paralyzing. The younger bomber still at large, the MIT officer who was killed, are no more than two people from me. I just want this to end.

Just read an article where the alleged father of the two suspects claims his sons were set-up and framed; that they had no experience with explosives at all. Yet the media reports that there were more home-made bombs found in the young men's apartment. So far, both men have been described as .... well .... nice people. But how many psychopaths are sitting on deathrow now who were once described as nice people? It doesn't sound as though these two young men were part of any kind of serious terrorist cell, though it's possible they could've egged themselves on by the terrorist acts of those they seem to have identified with as of late. The bombs were (according to authorities) made by amateurs and obviously those two young men didn't have much of an escape plan, so I'm thinking that they just went off the deep end without any help from any terrorist organizations. Who knows? I'm beginning to think that once again, we'll never get the whole story. It was a senseless act, regardless, and I hope they catch the young man alive.

I'd imagine that denial is a pretty standard response (if such a thing exists in these circumstances) to finding out a direct relative may have been involved in murders.

Yeah, you don't want to believe that someone you love is capable of committing such a heinous act. I keep seeing pictures of this young man and each time I think, my God - he's just a kid! I mean, wtf?! Sorry, I just have trouble wrapping my brain around the 'why' of this whole tragedy.

That's why I really hope they take him alive, which always seems to become less and less likely the more intense everyone gets. I suppose it doesn't guarantee any sort of satisfactory explanation, or any explanation at all really. But if he gets shot everyone is mostly free to make up whatever and we really don't need any more of that.
The Cops seem to have been pretty cool headed about it, relatively speaking (I mean, they aren't shooting up the town at random like the LA cops did looking for Dorner. Mass. State police are a bit more sane so far)

Well they got him apparently, without too much bother.

One interesting dimension is these guys relative determination to survive. That's one thing that makes them not seem like "Islamic terrorists" as such, at least recently in western countries. All of them have not planned on getting out alive so far. They may not have had an escape plan as such, but they weren't going down with the ship either.

I was listening to a stream of the police scanner as the whole thing went down. There was something almost darkly irresistible about following it and wanting to know how it'd end... thankfully without further casualties.
Unfortunately the younger one, only 19, may have been heavily influenced by his older brother (brainwashed might be too strong), who might have had more of a deathwish depending on how he went down; we don't know. That makes it almost sound a little like the older guy & teenager that went on the serial shooting spree in Virginia a few years ago. Of course even being that influenced is no defense, nor should it be... It's just very sad all around. I guess we'll see what facts emerge.
I almost hope for the world sanity's sake it has nothing to do with religion. I'm already tired of the FB feed coming out of this. (The heroic Brevik photos are particularly disgusting. FFS, really?) And I wish the uncle would get more airtime as a representative of moderate suburban Islam. He's the only one that's talked at the common sense level people can relate to, saying the kids did it probably because they're losers and bringing shame to their family & ethnicity.

The Russian authorities had told the FBI that Tamerlan was growing more radical. And that he could be able to commit a terrorist act. The mother of the boys has said in an interview that the FBI had been monitoring Tamerlan for 3-5 years. (I think I heard their Aunt say the same thing). Mother, Aunt, Uncle had all been interviewed by the FBI about Tamerlan.
Nice job, FBI.
Laws are changed. People's basic rights are being violated. Not only in the US, but everywhere. I've lost at least 5 little nailclipping scissors at airports. I had to take off my shoes in public a zillion times. There's cameras hanging on every streetcorner in some countries. Kids growing up seem to be brainwashed that basic privacy is of least importance. For what ?
When the FBI gets direct information about a potential criminal, they fuck up. Just like they had been warned about the guys who flew into the WTC. Maybe time to install a camera in everyone's livingroom and bedroom ?
