bout to start DX again for like 200th time, anything I should try differently? - by pdenton

This isn't really advice but I would like to share with everyone my methods of playing through Deus Ex during the countless times I replayed it.
The 1st time I had never really played a sneaky game before, although I did like thinking games like System Shock 2 so a lot of people died from a shotgun or assault rifle in the face. I did kill quite a few people until I realised that this game was so utterly incredible and I felt compelled to act more realisticly, so I started to sneak and use non-lethal takedowns on people I thought didn't deserve to die (UNATCO, Chineese police, sailors etc...)
The 2nd time I was sneaky but I killed less NSF (since I knew they were going to be my allies. I Still killed any jerks I met like thugs, especially Johnny (Sandra's pimp remember?!)
The 3rd time was in Backstabbing ninja bastard more. Not a single person I killed saw it coming. If I was spotted I reached for the quick load button.
the 4th time was on killimajig mode. I.E. Anyone who can die MUST DIE! This went for Friendly or Hostile UNATCO Troops, Friendly or Hostile NSF Terrorists, policemen, totally innocent civillians, hostages screaming for me to help them, small children crying because I just machine gunned their hostage parents in the face, bystanders begging me to spare them after I shotgunned a crying child in the face after machinegunning their hostage parents in the face, triads, nightclub bouncers, bhuddist monks, drug addicts, hostile targets, friendly targets, neutral targets, alive targets, dead targets (just to make sure), dying targets, cats, dogs, mice, greasels, flies prostitutes, starving tramps and executive businessmen. I tried to kill everyone in the entire game, even if it was indirect (ie I allowed my brother to die, Jock to die, Smuggler to die!)
I also started a couple of games on Walking Tank mode and Sneaky Grandma more (no weapons at all, just medkits) but by then I actually started to get bored of the best game the world has ever seen!

This post is full of spoilers, and I'm assuming that's OK because the subject says 200 times
OK, I read all this and I have some corrections to make, if you don't mind my doing that.
You have to kill Anna. You have to kill Howard Strong. You don't have to kill *anyone* else. You can finish the game without killing Simons, a serious oversight in my opinion, since he's qualified for Helios. Now, would you want *that* to happen?
There is no such thing as truly non-lethal. People are going to die when you destroy that UC, for example, even if you don't see it. People are going to die when you sink the ship, unless you cart every unconscious body off the ship first.
Ignoring that, the only "nonlethal" ending is Helios. In Illuminati, you *have* to kill Page, and in Tong, a lot of people surely die in that explosion.
Re: Lebedev and Anna - I don't recall if you get points for killing Anna, but I *know* you get PAID for killing Lebedev.
New way to play - try playing sneak/demolitions (saboteur). No, this is not nonlethal, but it's different. Plant LAMs, run away, and shoot them from a distance for accurate effect, set off alarms intentionally so that people run out right into your booby traps (gas grenades are fun for this), reprogram computers and turrets, etc. Innocent-looking JC is never near all the mayhem he causes.
Edit: I assume you've found all the secret areas? Training? UNATCO? Airfield? Hong Kong market?
Enjoy.

Well, I think when people are discussing non-lethal, they are talking about JC actually going out there and shooting someone in the back of the head. True, things are going to happen (PRCS Wall Clound for example) and people are going to die, but that's really in your control, now is it?
As for the Anna-Lebedev bit, I'd go for 150 skill points over the 1000 or whatever Manderley gives you. Actually, I shouldn't be saying that cause I just got up to Smuggler before the Wall Cloud and I didn't even have enough on me to buy a the 6 LAMs for 2400. Maybe I should stop spending money at the Lucky Money on Hookers. Oh, buying a hooker at Lucky Money gets you a minute piece of info about Max Chen, but is basically useless. Also, I got those two chicks outside Lucky Money into the club, and one kept asking for 10 credits for a drink. She did it over and over and I kept agreeing because I thought it might amount to something I haven't seen before, but I just got fed up and stopped. Anyone know if anything happens there?
And this time through, since I absolutely adore the sniper rifle, I'm living completely by my rifle. The sniper rifle is the only projectile weapon I use. I'm free to use anything else like grenades, turrets and bots to my advantage, but no other guns. The only problem is I'm sneaking around the PRCS Wall Cloud right now absolutely terrified to kill anyone because I only have 7 bullets left.

I love that sniper rifle. When I'm playing lethal it is often the only projectile weapon I use, also.
Mercedes (the girl who wants her tab paid) is a scam artist. She'll empty your wallet and never deliver the goods. Knocking her out is more productive - she's loaded. She lied to you.
*Everyone* in the Lucky Money is up to no good. It's fun to talk to Marty (the lady you pay admission to) - she's into S&M. The barfly rolls the guy with the gold watch, and tries to sell it to you.
What a wonderful den of iniquity! Have fun, but watch your back - and your wallet.
Oh, and did you know that the hookers are slaves? The bartender in the Old China Hand will tell you about this.

The guy in the Old China Hand...? I can't remember what he says...
Well, just had another round of DX and I almost hyperventilated when I realized there are THREE sniper rifle clips at the top of the crane in the Naval Ship Yards.

Re: skill points.
You get two hundred if you talk to Lebedev on the plane after killing Anna. (Serves her right, I hate it when people are rude enough to interrupt a conversation.)
You also get 50 if you buy the GEP ammo from Smuggler, but not if you buy the LAMs. Go figure. It goes against the grain, but I usually have to waste at least one rocket in Hong Kong to be allowed to pay for skill points. With all the explosives lying around in the shipyard and on the Wall Cloud, buying the stuff from smuggler is really a waste of money.

Well, you could refine your drone bot skill once you get it. I don't remember many people here talking about the drone bot, but I liked the idea of controlling it and watching where it goes and hearing that distant explosion when it hits the target. It's the slower version of Undying's phoenix stones.
Shadowhawk on 22/11/2001 at 05:11
Drone bot...? I assume you mean the Spy Drone aug...you can't improve it with skill points, you need aug upgrades.
Homoludens on 24/11/2001 at 07:20
[embarrassed] Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's wot I meant. Wot you said. [/embarrassed]
If I remember correctly, the augs merely render the explosives more powerful.
