Well, yeah, god forbid two games 10 years apart be different.

They couldn't have made a game like Doom 3 in 1993 if they wanted to. The CPUs and graphics cards couldn't do realistic dynamic lighting needed to have a flashlight. You would either have to light up the whole player's view, or have him run around in the dark. The former wouldn't be scary, and the later wouldn't be fun.

Dynamic lighting worked fine in Descent. That was what, 1994?

As for the Doom engine lacking features... if we're talking the vanilla doom.exe, sure. But G/Zdoom has gone far beyond that.
Well that is hardly relevant. The comment was "so much better than the Doom engine at roughly the same time", not "so much better than the ZDoom engine would be 17 years later".

That's still wrong, though. Both had their strengths and weaknesses.

Fair enough. "Better" certainly depends upon the individual requirements. "Sophisticated" might be a more appropriate term.
The main strength of the Doom engine was speed. Feature-wise, I think the only thing Doom did that Shock couldn't was allowing walls at arbitrary angles.

Doom was fast and lacked the clunkiness of the SS1 engine. SS1 had more features, but it felt a lot more patched-together overall. Textures jumped about, movement was extremely awkward, among other issues.

Since we're being all old school and such itt I wanted to ask if you guys knew of any good mods for Wolfeinstein 3d?
i.e. one that made it graphically more appealing or somesuch, maybe use the Doom engine?
Thanks :)
Not that I dislike old graphics, but I wouldn't mind a slight overhaul.
Heck, feel free to throw in any good Wolf3d mods you recommend, please.
