My opinion of Scarface? I watched it a few years back and thought...yeah...it was good. Back during it's heyday, I could see why it was such a mindblowing, influential movie. But that's the biggest problem with it. So many other movies have aped so much of its style, it ends up seeming a bit cliche and tired when watched these days.
Also, it's 80's as HELL. The only thing that'd make it more 80's is if it had a scene with Al Pacino teaching the Karate Kid how to ride a dirt bike over a Cyndi Lauper soundtrack.

Contrary to SE's protest, I think it (Scarface) was pretty clearly a romanticizing film; not even speaking just about the obvious hot tub kinds of scenes. Even the "bad" ending had a romantic "final blaze of glory" to it. I mean, when you walk into one of those shops by colleges that sells posters for incoming dorm students, they'll always have posters & t-shirts like Bob Marley, Che Guevara, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zepplin, Hopper's diner painting, and inevitably Pacino holding up his little friend. Whenever you create an image that's that destined for the walls of incoming college freshmen, you're in the business of romanticizing.
I just finished off the first season of BB. My first impression is I appreciate they put thought into the writing & plotting, more than most shows, so there's a very natural flow to how the pieces come together. E.g., the bit about missed opportunities after grad school (they start cuing that from the first episode; you see that plaque & wonder why is he teaching high school) & not being in control of his destiny, and add to that the former flame & the past work possibly being responsible for his current cancer angles, gives a lot deeper edge to his motivations. The blatant black humor to it is also fun to watch.

Scarface is about the danger of wanting it all and going about it the wrong way. You could say the end it's going out in a blaze of glory, you could say it's a final struggle to escape the inevitable, the inexorable result of brutal excess. I don't find it romanticising because everything goes to sh1t and ultimately - what was the point? Everyone who was close to you is gone or hates you and now you're being, ahem, cashed out.

FWIW I think Scarface is a horrible movie.

...well holy shit.
I'm pretty sure poor old Gomey is down for the count after this episodeedit: After tonights episode, I couldn't resist the temptation, so I looked up the names of the final 3 episodes, and what I think is gonna happen based on the titles.
MOAR SPOILER TAGS! WOOSH!
Ozymandias: Very obviously references (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozymandias) this poem from back in yee olde daeys. The central theme, per Wikipedia, being "The central theme of "...the inevitable decline of all leaders, and of the empires they build, however mighty in their own time". Considering what happened tonight, it's rather appropriate.
Also, my theory that the White Power Gang is going to attempt getting rid of Walt is more or less confirmed tonight. They're not gonna want him around knowing the DEA is not only on his tail, but has enough evidence against him to make an arrest. He's too much of a liability for them to keep around for long.
Granite State: AKA New Hampshire. The Live Free or Die state. This makes me think the last two episodes are going to take place after his 52nd birthday. Walt is forced to go on the run due to whatever happens in Ozymandias, with the final chapters of the story taking place a year later.
Felina: This? I have no idea. I'm still thinking Walt intends to go out in a blaze of glory, but considering how the writers love toying with our emotions, it's either gonna fall flat, or something else is going to happen to make it even more tragic and terrible.Gawww! I don't want it to end, but I can't wait to see how it all ends. SO CONFLICTED!
edit 2: you know, I really fucking hate autocorrect.

I felt sick to my stomach those last five minutes. You could feel the dread hanging in the air. And even after it cut to the credits, I still do.

Oh gawd!
This is tragic. Walter could quote Adam Jensen without criticism I think. Mental.
It's so compelling!

It is. Terribly depressing. But it's also a good movie.

I digged the ending of the episode right up until it all kicked off.
one dude empties an automatic shotgun and nobody was turned into red paste. Then they throw more ammo their way and still nobody is dead. god mode and infinite ammo much?
Kinda ruined it for me and reminded me of that scene in Hot Shots 2 were they're blasting away at each other from only a metre distance.
