Is there any way to activate aureal 3d audio using modern hardware in the Thief games? I saw a few demos on youtube and it just sounded so much better than eax.

Never heard of it. Why is there not even an option in game? How would you go about enabling it? I have EAX ready in my Thief games, but always found it a little too artificial post-effect sounding (but better than nothing). Would love to have an alternative.

With that a3d driver installed half-life stops running. Removed the driver - works again. Win7-64

So you install this driver, then what do you do to actually make it work in game ?
Btw somehow sound stopped working in my Thief Gold game (with Tfix and HD texture mod), but I think it happened BEFORE I even installed the driver? O_o Any known causes?

In Thief's audio settings enable hardware excelleration, then turn EAX off(assuming you already have the a3d driver installed). The sound differences will blow you away. You should install OpenAL beforehand if you have not done so already.
Not sure why your sound stopped working though. I usually just reinstall if anything weird happens like that.

Yeah I have openAL installed and use creative alchemy and it always worked. I also tried switching between Hardware, openAL and software, none returned the sound. I guess I'll just reinstall. Why do you have acceleration on hardware and not on OpenAL though?
Is your Half Life straight out of CD? Then it might be unpatched:
"Half-Life
The 1.0.0.9 patch fixed issues with A3D playback on some older Monster Sound cards. "
By the way, how do you know A3D driver installed for you? I noticed nothing new in device manager? Using Windows 10 with Omega Claro II sound card.

I can confirm now:
Reinstalled Thief 1 + Tfix = sound works perfectly
Ran the A3D setup again = No sound in Thief 1 again.
