Sorry, error on my part. Hardware Excelleration needs to be set to
OpenAL with EAX turned off.
The way I understand it, it is not a traditional sound "driver". It is a wrapper that translates the a3d calls to OpenAL, so you effectively get a3d sound. I know it installed because of the difference in sound in Thief. It just adds so much more depth. EAX just sounded like echoing. See this thread for more information, it even gives a few success stories:(

Great advice on Half Life by the way.
EDIT: strange, I never had a problem with the audio simply failing. I am using Thief Gold though. TDP fully supports a3d sound.

Hrmph. More news: I had Thief 1 folder enabled in Creative Alchemy software. When I disabled it, Thief 1 regained sound even with A3D. So it's either A3D OR Creative Alchemy. Which is NOT an issue, because Creative Alchemy is not necessary for OpenAL or EAX to work.
The only question remains is... How do I know A3D works? I have OpenAL and EAX selected and it doesn't sound any different than before? How do I know exactly?

Not sure I notice any difference between just "hardware acc" and "OpenAL"

I notice much better sound in Thief. There are also quite a number of a3d-related files in my windows folder such as "A3DSplsh.exe". It seems this method is not working for everyone, I'm not sure what's wrong, but I'll keep looking into it.

That's a a pity. What Windows are you using? I just tried windows xp service pack 2 and Windows 98 compatibility, but noticed no difference either.

Did you install anything else besides A3D-Live.exe ?
Jax64 on 19/1/2016 at 20:14
No, nothing else. I am on a Win64 machine. I uninstalled and reinstalled a3d-live to look into your issue. After I reinstalled, it doesn't work anymore. I'll see if I can get it to work again.

Thanks for the info folks :)
They really had something special, Creative probably set us back 5-10 years when they bought them out and didn't make use of the tech for whatever reason.
Eax only features simulated reverb, a3d featured actual sound emitter based reflections.
There was a better demo on youtube but it has since been taken down :p

Do we just need the a3d-live.exe? I'm not sure of the difference between that and the 3rd file down.

In theory, yes, just a3d-Live.exe
No guarantees it will work for you, but it's worth a shot.
