What about a Thief musical, with Liza Menilli doing the sound track? :cheeky:

Can you really picture Garrett dancing???
Well, after LadyTaffer's painting, I think maybe...

I'm a writer, though not yet a published one. I'll also add that I've never done a script before, so I'd have to research the format. All that aside, I'd be happy to write a script and put it up for the community to review and think about.
Before anyone can even begin to think about this though, we need to consider what we can get away with. I would actually prefer to make a script involving a new set of characters and circumstances... for one we don't have any copyright freedoms with Garrett and such, and for another it'd be very difficult to cast him.
I'm more worried about what we could get away with in the extended universe. Could we even use builders and keepers? Pagans are easy enough to get away with at least.

Re-posted from the other (now dying) thread:
Having worked on a large project in this community, I'm going to recommend a few things to those of you proposing this (though my instinct is to antagonize you...restraint, restraint...)
1. You need someone with administrative and organizational skills at the beginning - this is not just someone with 'a passion to see it get done'. Internet projects require an EPIC, BREATHTAKING, and EXHAUSTIVE amount of communication, security, and file organization. Get someone who can handle the responsibility DAILY.
2. Invite creative folks based on experience and past work - not just 'a real love of the game'. You need examples of their work. You need to meet with a small team of the most creative and experienced at the beginning define what the project will be, how things will be done, and who calls the shots.
3. Divorce yourself of the concept that a community project works like a democracy. 200 people will not agree on anything. Someone, or a small group has to run the show, and the rest have to abide by their decisions, and those relationships need to be understood clearly from the get go. Otherwise you spend more time debating than creating.
4. Keep deadlines. This is the toughest part over the internet because you want to give people the benefit of the doubt. T2X would have been finished much earlier if we'd replaced folks about the 2nd time they didn't finish an assignment on time. Chances are, if it's past deadline and e-mails aren't being returned, the person has either died or bailed. Move on. Same thing with those in charge. If you've got 5 people leading, and one or two aren't doing anything, cut the fat and move on.
5. Prepare for the long haul. You'll finish it about 3 years after you thought you would. If you plan on going to college, getting married, having babies, or changing jobs in the middle, it will postpone your contributions considerably. Make sure before you start you're able to commit the time, energy, and possibly money that will be necessary to see it through. Stick with others who are equally committed. For examples, see CoSaS, T2X, Hammerite Emperium, Theivery, Dark Mod, etc. Talk to those guys and find out how they made/are making it happen. Experience is invaluable in an internet project.
6. Copyright issues are a major obstacle. Who owns the intellectual properties? Eidos got bought by _________________ and there is no intention of doing anything else with the franchise. Garrett is eternally trapped in copyright limbo along with Goggles (SS2), Cate Archer (NOLF), and Paul Denton (DX). With T2X we went with a different main character, but stayed true to the rest of the Thief universe. If it's not-for-profit you can do whatever you like IIRC, but without profit you can't afford to cast Stephen Russell as Garrett, or anyone professional for that matter, unless someone pays for it straight up. My knowledge on this issue is weak, but I know our lead guys checked this up and down before we started, and we ended up deciding to work around the Garrett factor. Lazarus was the only one around here who did a decent impression anyway, and he's long gone by now I think.
It's no small thing you propose, but if you *must* do it, the above is my free and specific advice. Good luck. See ya in 7 years.

What about you guys to grow up?
I love the support. The ingenious concept that was created should be explored in film. It has nothing to do with thief geeks who don't have a life. Grow up? I have nothing else to say to you or the others with their sarcasm. If your going to give criticism, make it constructive.

I've taken screenwriting classes and would be happy to review your work and convert it if you like. Or if you wanted to do it yourself I could give you pointers because there's more to just converting it to the format. A screenplay works entirely different. I hear what your saying. My opinion would be to start small with short films. To get the atmosphere down, the angles, locations, the mood, and to test some writing that feels like it belongs in that world. Then move on to bigger things which require the obstacles and concerns you have. But if you want to come up with ideas that would be great, I'd love to film whatever comes out of this and edit it-that being my strongest experience. But I want to write something larger and complex but would love to do it with a group of others. We should discuss this further and get what other people think.

I'm sorry, obviously I've missed the section:

I am a small independent filmmaker from WA, I am a huge fan of Thief, I've won a local film fest. I've already done a dark medieval piece.
anyway, we are an internet community and most of us have never seen each others. how are we going to help?

People can get involved with the writing process for some ideas. Then there's the people who know the world really well who could be great consultants to make sure the writing is accurate according to places, factions, characters, etc. Then the filmmakers can step in if given permission if it isn't there own written work. Then there's all the post production work like sound, music, and digital effects. the shorts can be sent to these people to do what their good at. This doesn't have to be just one project either- this could be several different ones going on. This entire process I want available to the entire community then feedback can be given. Input is always a plus.

I can figure out that shooting a thief scene in my room would inevitably break both my legs, limited space around in this room.
A dark ambiance, and a short cam wire = me tripping down the floor.

So what exactly are you implying by saying that?

Well as of now I am going to take a crack at writing a story for this project, and when I finish it, I'll post it here. Anyone else wanna do so, no one's stopping you, any film is going to need a script derived from an original story, I figure I'll start there.
I may write two, one featuring Garrett, one not. Actually the story not featuring Garrett has been rattling around in my head for years. It'll probably be easier for most people here to digest, if history is an accurate teacher here.
I'm going ahead and writing this because it is worth my time, via pm's CalmBeforeTheStorm has said some very encouraging things to me. If you want in, you should talk to him.
In addition to writing such a story, I am going to investigate tracking down whoever owns the rights, if they'll even see me.
I have a lawyer, so I have representation.
If I write it with permission there will be copyright involved.
These are pretty big if's.
I am aware that you can't really prevent a story from being stolen, but various people I meet give me various versions about what futile steps you can take to protect your intellectual property.
I am going to defer to a pro opinion in this case.
