Having worked on a large project in this community, I'm going to recommend a few things to those of you proposing this (though my instinct is to antagonize you...restraint, restraint...)
1. You need someone with administrative and organizational skills at the beginning ...
2. Invite creative folks based on experience and past work - ...
3. Divorce yourself of the concept that a community project works like a democracy. ...
4. Keep deadlines. This is the toughest part over the internet because you want to give people the benefit of the doubt. ...
5. Prepare for the long haul. You'll finish it about 3 years after you thought you would. ...
6. Copyright issues are a major obstacle. ...
It's no small thing you propose, but if you *must* do it, the above is my free and specific advice. Good luck. See ya in 7 years.
Well said fett! Sounds exactly like the start of the Darkmod to me. :) I think that any bigger project must be prepared to face the points you raised. If nto the mod, or whatever it is, is doomed to die if it is of any decent size.

I'm glad there's another who is interested in this concept. The things your bringing up seem very daunting. But the passion is there, and that counts.
Actually there are more people interested in this. There is just a bit of holding bakc, where I'm concerend, to see wether you really deliver. I would love to help if I can, but first of all I'm no artist but a programmer, and also I'm currently deeply engaged in The Dark Mod project (a Doom 3 total conversion to create thief style gameplay) and so my time is rather limited.
Still, I was already interested when this came up in the other thread, because I believe that it can be done, but it takes a lot of effort and time.
I hope though that this will not just be a cheesy medivial amateur movie, where so many of them are available on various sites, where clowns are jumping around in mockup costumes.

I give my word that this isn't that. I hope to prove it with this small, visual short.

I'm not sure how long this thread is dead but, anyone ever thought about making it CG? spare the production from a lot of problems and, of course, creates a whole new bunch of them :)
the CG community is also very big, with a lot of people willing to work on new things and all that...
i tried myself to make some models and texture them, but to work alone on something like that, ONLY on vacation, is probably going to take forever.
if anyone is interested I could try to put what i have done online (wich is basically a 'half way there' garrett)
btw, the idea of doing it by episodes is really great! i've never thought about it!

I wonder, if that CG community is so big and a lot of people have the skill to create a movie, why nobody of all this silent people is registering for TDM. The skills are the same, and we could certainly use talented modeller. And if they are talented enough to create models and textures for a CG movie, they should be talented enough to help on TDM as well.

The thing with the CG community is that mostly people want to work on your project for as long as they need to buff up their portfolio and get a job in the industry.
Or they already have a job and they don't have the time. Or they're never going to get a job because they aren't good enough.
Or they do it as a hobby, in which case they'd only really be interested if they are also interested in Thief to start with. And if they had time on their hands, were good, and were interested in Thief, I would expect them to have at some point discovered TTLG or projects like the Dark Mod and eagerly offered their services.
There are always exceptions, though.

I hate to be a bore, but since it's been over twenty days without an update whatsoever by the creator of the short, it seems likely that this project has died or gotten into some troubles.
Then again, I never expected T2X to finish either, but when it did... hooo boy I was surprised :D

I understand the criticism, and agree. just gotta have patience and keep looking on cgtalk, threedy (and every CG forum) for help. and what would be the problem if they are doing just for the portfolio, without being a thief fan? they'll be contributing just the same, and the concern about making a good work will still be there. it's their portfolio afterall.
maybe what happens is that a mod isn't as appealing as a short film, when calling for contributors. And just a thing i've noticed, good artists are drawn when they see good work. so when posting a 'want help' thread in some cg forum try posting attatched some of oddity's hi res models, some cool map screen shots. :D

I was thinking pretty much the same, but what about making the movie (or episodes or whatever) in Thief-cutscene form? I've always liked the idea of the last cutscene of Deadly Shadows just continuing and showing what happens afterwards with Garrett and everyone...
But the copyright issue would probably prohibit a lot of ideas :(
