But the copyright issue would probably prohibit a lot of ideas :(
I'm not sure but, I don't think that would be a problem, it's not a commercial movie.. just fan stuff :) that would even probably benefit them! 'free ad! woohool!' (by 'them' i mean eidos or whoever holds the rights to the whole thief thing)

It's a common missconception that "fan projects" are somhow immune to copyright "violations". they are not, and there are a lot of fan projects which were shut down due to supposed copyright infringement.

It's amazing how the king of "cease and desist" letters, George Lucas, allows Star Wars fan films. You'd think if he allows it, anyone would. A Thief film would probably be safe, but best to check it out with someone from Eidos before spending large amounts of time and money.
That said, just gotta interject my .02 - any Thief movie using The Dark Project storyline could be good, but you'd have to cut out a significant portion of the game. There's not much of a plot in the first 5-6 missions. "The Sword" would be the best starting point, maybe with a little Bafford's during the opening credits.

I belive what you guys are saying is true. but are you sure the limitations aren't for commercial projects? because i find it hard to belive that if i make a family movie in my garden, where i wear a hood and say 'i'm garrett' is breaking any laws.
maybe the limitations aren't on the commercial or not commercial, but on where you present them. for home purposes that would be ok, and not for public viewing. Of course.. that's only my personal speculation! 'the way law was supposed to be, By Diego' :joke:

Of course you are breaking (quite stupid) laws there as well, but nobody cares. It also depends on where you live. It might be legal and it might not. In the land where money rules above everything else (USA) you probalby would be illegal.
However, if you make a movie and distribute it on the internet for anybody to download, then you are no longer in your family garden, and companies start to care. In fact they are even forced to care, because if they neglect to say something on the matter, then they have a much slimmier chance to win a case against the next guy who actually starts to exploit it commercially.

I hate to be a bore, but since it's been over twenty days without an update whatsoever by the creator of the short, it seems likely that this project has died or gotten into some troubles.
The project hasn't died. I've been real busy. There has been some delays involving props. Yes, I agree with the later post about bringing visuals if you're trying to get people involved. I know I'm a newb when it comes to this, but I can't figure out how to get pics on this? If someone could tell me in "laymens terms" that would be great. I would like to show location stills as well as costumes. I think a mixture of film and the way the cutscenes are done in the games would be the ultimate thing but first I'm going to do this and get feedback. I know this whole thread seems like another crappy idea that really won't go anywhere. But
when it does get done, it won't be crap. I promise. I'm a filmmaker and I take it very seriously and each project I do, I do as if it were portfolio material. Sorry things have taken so long and still no results that people want. I'm just not going to rush a project.

"lamence terms"
Erm . . .thats (
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/layman) 'layman's terms' *coughs*
As for how to put a picture up here. . .first you need to upload the picture somewhere, be it your own host, or a service such as imageshack, then while writing a message, click the 'insert image' button in the message toolbar, enter the url to where your image is hosted and hit 'ok'. Voila, picture inserted.
And I agree with others here. This project is indeed interesting, should it come to fruition and not be another fly-by-night idea. I wouldn't mind getting involved a bit myself if it is something that will pan out. But I do agree that I need to see some proof that it will before I spend any time on it. I've been part of too many projects that take up far too much time then come to nothing. Its downright painful. I can understand people's wariness when it comes to getting involved if that is all they can see.
It would be nice to see some project updates, as well as some 'screenshots' where possible. (Live captures? photos? Whatever you want to call them.)

Well, sometimes I thought making a fan video about Thief, so I think a film would be perfect. But please you taffers don't even mention Uwe Boll directing the movie!! :tsktsk:

i see u are thinking about making a movie, the story is great and i always said "this has to become a movie". that is one of the reasons i made THIEF TRILOGY a complete movie that has all the cutseans and Breefings for the missing parts of the story and trailers of my own. Ill be posting about it soon
and i think if you will shoot a movie, Thief Trilogy can serve as a source for the complete story of the thief series and a history for Garrett's life
