It's been long enough that the actual details are hazy, but it was the signing into GfWL which was the problem, and I wasn't the only one. I might give it another shot.

On that note: the problem for me was that the game didn't seem to like offline profiles. You had to be logged into an online profile for it to work - and logging in to my online profile is something I haven't been able to do since GFWL shut down.
The only workaround I found for it was to manually disable my entire internet connection, then I could log in. Hardly an ideal solution. :(
