So I'm trying to leave the prison without alerting the guards, but I can't. When I open the gate, one of the hammers runs to close it before I have time to sneak out. I don't think it's possible. Unless I'm missing something?

You can't leave from the main gate, you need to find the key to the side door in the guards room. Have you found your sword yet ? if so
check out the barracksone other thing, there's a bug in this mission where you can't frob the Horn of Quintus due to a ridiculously small frobbing distance, Voodoo has supplied a dml fix to correct this issue get it from (

Just finished it, it worked fine for me without the fix, just had to get close enough

For the morbidity of me, I can't seem to get out of the prison cell I start in.
Am I supposed to grab a key from the passing Hammerite...Then use it on my own cell door? Because the cell door is not even frobbable at all.
I then went for an unorthodox method of calling out the guards, making them unlock the door for me so I can run away. It was unconventional with the door not being frobbable, it even got stuck in the middle which made everything worse.
I can't believe I'm stuck right at the very start.

Prisons in Thief seem to be the worst for me, I can generally find secret switches even in the dark, but this was a stupid blind take at my part.
