Ah, ok. You played a game you hated for four years because you kept expecting it to get better. Thanks for clarifying.
I didn't
hate it, or I wouldn't have played it for even a week. I just never got to that elusive super-fun part of the game that apparently only came out when someone was FRAPSing.

Which area of nullsec were you in? Some are (were) much worse than others and a huge amount depends on the corp / alliance you're involved in.
I shuffled around between a few in the last couple years I was playing; I started with Ascendant Frontier just in time to see it get wiped out by BoB, then I joined the RAZOR Alliance for a while, even did GoonSwarm for a bit. They all were pretty much the same as far as operating procedures went, though GS liked to do silly zerg rush stuff from time to time.

Lord of the Rings Online - YES. Finally it all clicks, as I find a game that I like the story of (and I wasn't even much of a Tolkien fan before I started), like the lore behind and like the way it's angled more towards solo quest-play than grinding or massively grouping (though there's plenty of both if you wish).

I recently re-subscribed to EVE for a month so I could harass people harassing people in Jita.
Once upon a time, I was a WoW Addict - I think the way up to 60 and the initial journey of discovery is a great delight, but the end game is tiring and crap so I quit. Also, they gave up trying to balance Shaman on Horde and Paladin on Alliance and just made them playable by both sides. What a cop out.

To add in some extra bits I forgot to mention in my earlier post.
I tried out Warhammer online (back when it 1st came out) for a few months and for a change played for the bad guys (Chaos). Played as a Chaos Warrior mostly. Not bad game, but it didn't have that "Warhammer" feel to it. Sure the setting and graphics looked nice, and the pvp was alot of fun. But the singleplayer end of the scale was just meh after a while, and needing to find other people to do the public quests with got annoying fast.
I came back briefly when the game went free to play (up to level 10 anyway). Before stopping entirely.
Played Dungeons and Dragons for a year roughly when it first went free to play. Interesting game. Unlike WoW and Warhammer this one felt COMPLETELY different despite its fantasy setting. Sure you still have tanks sort of and healers, but thieves/rogues are actually essential in some dungeons in this game. The leveling up system which reminded me a hell of alot of Neverwinter Nights was/is very good, and the accumulation of DDO store money from reputation gains (gained via completing each dungeon in an area, the higher the difficulty the better the rep gain) which you can then use to purchase additional classes, greater inventory space, new questing zones (which = even more rep gaining on the next character you make) was a good idea, as it gives the player the choice between investing time to unlock things or just spend actual money to get it much quicker. I went for the longer option. Still play this one on the odd rare occasion.

Guild Wars beta: played it for an hour, couldn't get into it. Didn't like the idea of contrinually paying a subscription.
Lineage 2: Trial. Rather attractive dark elves and an interesting choice of music for dwarves starting area. Lost interest within 3 hours.
Planetside: This was much more my kind of thing. I'd been playing a lot of Wolfenstien:ET and loved the objective based stuff, Planetside offered so much to do. I might try the new one, though it looks pretty much the same, but slightly shinier. NC4LYFE! Kill the Barnies, Kill the Elmos etc
Wow: College buddy convinced me to try it, no trials back then iirc. Stopped playing at lvl 32
WAR: I loved the warhammer lore and figured since it was being made by Mythic or w/e that it would be, in line with the lore, much darker and maybe more adult oriented. Completely wrong, game was a mix of nice lore and gameplay copy/pasted from WoW, with some major improvements to kill the boredom, which WoW begrudgingly copied in turn.
Age of Conan: Not quite the online adventure they promised, but it was so much better than anything else I've played. I honestly think it could have been one of the top MMO's if they hadn't made such a massive cock up.
Eve. I still remember the adrenaline blurt I got in my first pirate-pvp engagement. No other game offered this kind of experience and nothing has come close since. Sadly, Eve is structured like an onion; many, many layers, but once you've peeled them back you find a hollow core. Will never play again...unless its to transfer my remaining isk to my Dust 514 account.
I might try (

I rarely get much enjoyment from games these days.

I haven't tried it myself buI thought one of the big selling points for Guild Wars was that it didn't need a subscription.

I used to hate subscription too, then I played some MMOs without subscription.

(Vanilla) WoW is the only one I've played enough to say I played it. I clocked over a year in-game time in the end before I realised I should probably concentrate on something else. Also, I wasn't excited at all for the forthcoming expansion thus didn't buy it. Was really fun though! I kept on semi-serious guilds that raided end-game content on their own pace. Even attended a meet in UK for my guild. Met some wonderful people.
In the end, the most fun aspect of the game ended up being the PVP: when we had the server's best group and rolled everyone but the best group from the Alliance (Arathi Basin). Those matches between groups had actualy tactical elements and really hectic battling. The endgame PVE content was fun, but it was stressful in a bad way - too much waiting, searching for players and some fucktwit doing something completely idiotic, which results in more waiting.

My memory might be fuzzy, but I think when it was in beta stage it was intended to be subscription based. I could even be thinking of a different game, but w/e. I also wasn't into fantasy RPG's, or RPG's in general back then.

With Planetside, Eve and Age of Conan, I obviously got over it. The big thing people use to defend subscription is the notion that all that persistent data costs a lot of money, which is just untrue.

Constant server upkeep, and all the people necessary to keep the game running 24/7, on the other hand, are actually pretty expensive.

Let me put it this way.
MMOs with subscription are message boards.
MMOs without subscription are imageboards.
