By playing Thief, are you saying something about yourself?. - by thelostsoul

Yeah I think an important thing about Thief is it was waaaay ahead of it's time in terms of player choice. Sure, the storyline's linear, but the missions themselves are extremely open. You really can play it how YOU want to. The very best Thief missions are structured so that you can do in the first five minutes what another player leaves until the last five minutes. It's not "Get from A to B, flip a switch, get from B to C, killing everything in your way". It's "Steal this item. If you like, you can go in via point A, B or C, using method D, E or F, interacting with the world as much or as little as you want."
Even today, most games don't have this level of open-endedness and freedom of choice.

For me, it's the feeling of a world that exists outside of my interaction with it. With a lot of games, the AI seems so focused on taking out the player, which means that without the player, the AI has nothing to do. With Thief, however, if I do my job correctly, the AI never notices me and so blissfully goes on it's way doing whatever it is that they do.
With most games, I just don't buy the reality of the world that the story takes place in.

Wow! what a great site, the prices are incredible. Can those be shipped to the U.S.? or is it just a europe only shop?

I think that what thelostsoul is actually asking is "are we all a bunch of closet stalkers, thieves and rapists?" or in other words, does playing thief say anything about your personality? It's a rude question that makes people squirm so they dodge it and instead answer the question they wanted to hear.
The answer is yea, I like being the creepy guy, the stalker, the peeper. When I play doom or HL I like being the powerful gunner. It's not so much about saving the world as it is about crushing the opposition and having a blast doing it. I don't think it says much about anyone that they like either type of game as liking this type of game is pretty universal. The gameplay in both is good. That, rather than pretending I'm a thief, is what keeps me coming back. It's all just games and you are taking it too seriously if you're drawing too many conclusions about the character of people who play thief.

When I play thief, I honestly don't really take any significant joy in the ability to steal things. I look at it more as a series of challenges (especially with the way that a lot of levels are structured combined with good ol' quicksave) combined with a well constructed storyline and universe. As for being a creepy voyeur, keep it in your pants, po...

You can guess if I was saying anything when I faced my very first haunt in Mechanist Temple in MA while trying to blackjack it when I thought it was a regular Hammer. I almost screamed my head off.
But - seriously - I find myself sometimes throwing some comment similar to the ones of Garrett. For example the guard at the well's door in Bafford's:
shoot an arrow to the lamp post, and when he turns to see what was that just walk forward, grab the key and walk in the well without him ever noticing you went by. That's impossible to fulfill without saying something 'classy' (usually a poor joke...) in real life.

What I love about the Thief series is really how it changed how computer games are played. Just about all the games nowadays are about violence- not necesarily a bad thing, but quite a bit of violence. Some games do a nice job of making the violence interesting; others don't.
I agree. All these violent games being released these days kind of "downgrade" the game. With Thief, however, you need to use your head and plan carefully your next move, so you can achieve the objective. The best thing about Thief is that you can go the whole game without killing anyone, which makes a significant change from the pointless, boring shooting and killing.
Plus, the beauty of Thief is that it created a whole new genre, being stealth. Thief is the daddy of franchises!

Same here! My first experience on Trail of Blood was a bit edgy. I was expecting getting mobbed by zombies any minute! :p

Ever play T1 or T2?
Of course - liked both very much. Didn't play till the end, though - see, Oblivion came out right in the middle and I just couldn't help purchasing it (how unexpectedly I got hooked on it is another long and very boring story - damn! I never even liked games of that sort!). At times I return to Thief Gold and (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=108438) this proves it I guess...:p
Hell, at times I return to re-playing T2 and T3, and to FMs.... It feels like whatever else I play, I always lack absolute satisfaction and then load Thief just to remember what it is... :)
