By playing Thief, are you saying something about yourself?. - by thelostsoul

"Nerd sex."
That is a phrase that needs to be used more often.
As for me, I love Thief for just about all the reasons listed here, but also because I've always been really nice, helpful and friendly: always the one who got along with everyone and was distressed every time there was strife among the group and never did anything bad, illegal, etc. So I'm basically a good person and I like that about myself, BUT. .
Thief fulfills my hidden (and I guess more masculine) desire to take what I WANT from anyone with no repercussions and fulfill my own selfish needs. The game just lets me wreck as much havoc as I want and be an absolute bastard and I love it. :ebil:

I wouldn't say it says much about me. I would say it says more about it being a good game with a capturing story.
As has been stated, its a nice break from the 'usual' games of now days. Most of them require you to run around killing - with very little else, while this one takes brains and while you *can* kill things, if you really want to, you can go through without killing a thing. The focus on violence is actually very muted. Hey, you can even get through without *hitting* anyone, even if hitting them doesn't kill them. I like that.
I also like that the hero of the story is something not generally explored. Oh, sure, its been explored some - thieves tend to be a fairly classic class in RPGs and such, but rarely do you really get to explore the aspct of being a thief. Much less one with a gripe, and not emphasized honor. He's a 'bad' guy and makes no bones about it. He doesn't pretend to be a hero. He ends up being one, but not for the sake of being one.
I find its a nice break and nice twist on things. Something different and different always appeals to me. :) Personally the running around stealing things feels no different to me than in the old adventure games where you pretty much picked up anything that wasn't bolted down for your own use. Even the old King's Quest games. . .you'd walk into someone's house and start rummaging, taking whatever you could. The only difference was, you did it openly and the AI didn't care! lol (Was a bit of a shock playing Morrowind after that...picked something up and promptly got slaughtered for stealing. I was rather confused! Took me awhile to recover from that and figure out how to get what I wanted anyway.) So, no, its not the stealing aspect.
I think I like being able to explore life from someone OTHER than a noble's perspective. Or the 'poor peasant' who just wants adventure and soon becomes a hero with titles and renoun across the land. This is a thief, living on the poor side of the city life, he ends up being a hero, but is mostly motivated to it because they won't leave him out of it and he's not the type to be picked on either. But when its done, few know anything about what he did and he more or less returns to the way things were before. (Yes, yes, I know TDS suggsted things changed, but we could debate about what until the cows come home and still not get a clear answer. :) I'd guess he went back to normal as well as he could and adapts to whatever else there is to adapt to - still no title and lands, still no glory as a hero. . .he remains a thief and scorned by most of the city. Silly people)
So does it say something about me? Well, perhaps it does. But not that I am some closet killer or silent thief. If anything it would say I am someone who enjoys something different and a darn good storyline. :)

To deal with the question:
Of course it says something about you.
What it says is subject to your own interpretation.
It may mean that you "wish" you were as free as Garrett.
It may mean that you want more control when you play a game. In most your actions are limited, and your route is straitly defined. A good example is Unreal Gold. You can never return to a prior section of the mission. Once you complete a certain sequence, you cannot back track. In THIEF if you have not completed all the objectives and forced an ending, you can return to any area at any time. You have (at least in the first three games) multiple paths to an objective, and are really limited more by your skill and imagination than by the game design.
It may mean that you are tired of the "If it moves KILL IT!" mentality displayed in most available games.
It might mean you are a free thinker and don't want to follow the crowd.
But as far as the question. Hell yes it says something about YOU.

I play because Garrett's voice is so great. And because I enjoy the dark, edgy feel of the game. What does that mean about me? That I like dry sarcastic deep male voices (prrrr) and that I like the dark. :cheeky:
And ever since I read
Silverthorn by Raymond Feist in junior high, I've had a soft spot for thieves. Jimmy the Hand was an awesome character and I think of him now as a young Garrett. ;)
I agree thieves are wonderful.... ^^ And the insolent, cynical type seems to get appreciated by readers best of all. :D
- What am I to do with you?
- ...
- And don't say anything about being Duke of Krondor.
- :)
- And don't tell me where you got that horse.
- :)
Cracks me up every time I so much as think of it...:laff:

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who likes those books! And I realized this morning that it's not just thieves. I like smugglers (Talon Kardde and Ghent are my favorite characters in the Star Wars expanded universe) and I adore pirates (Yesterday was Talk Like A Pirate Day and I missed it!!!! AAARRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!)
