By playing Thief, are you saying something about yourself?. - by thelostsoul

i play Thief because i can be the daemon i want to be, unseen, unheard, striking my unwitting victims from the shadows and dragging thier carcasses around and roasting them over a roaring fire. :ebil:
that, and i also love being the cool criminal, sneaking into a heavily guarded mansion, making off with whatever fat noblemans treasure i can carry, and making a silent escape, with all the guards waking up swaring they had a hangover. :ebil:

I love being so evil in getting guards down at moments that are most ironic, like:
"Hmmm. Nothing" And as they sheath their swords, I stick an arrow in their gob. :ebil:

As scary as this is to realize, I find the idea of playing a character who lives on the fringe of society interesting. There's something about existing in the shadows and cracks of society that’s fun to play. Escapism I guess.
And of course the protaganist...Thief would always be a great series but Garrett just brings class to it!
The dry humour, resignation that he plays a part in something outside his control and total professionalism...some good work on the developers part.

Thief is THE ultimate game for escapism from the real world. :thumb:

I don't think I'm a closet thief :).
I like being able to incapacitate people without killing them. It seems so much kinder to blackjack them. I feel guilty when I kill people [in games, not in real life!], and what's so great about Thief is you don't normally have to - there is an alternative. I like being able to carry them around and put them where I like. I imagine them waking up and wondering what the heck happened. Maybe that says something strange about me! I like some of the enemies in Thief - the Hammers, etc. - I find them endearing with their little complaints, etc. I don't want to always be up against evil, scary enemies. In real life, often our enemies are just ordinary.

Great thread. Great discussion. Allow me to chime in with my own thoughts. Ever since I was a kid, I always loved playing hide and go seek. LOVED IT! Loved hiding in the shadows and in strange places while people sought me out. The tension always appealed to me. That's a big part of what Thief does for me.
But something else that I didn't expect, was my love of the setting. Over the years I've grown to have an appreciation of Victorian London. I'm a big fan of the book Dracula, movies like From Hell and Murder By Decree and things like that. Lurking in the shadows of a dark warren or a dirty alley while the buildings all around reach up to the sky at odd angles. The idea of running over rooftops while people sleep in their beds.
The setting itself just really appeals to me, along with the idea of creeping through the shadows.
