i'm patched, and no weapons are drawn at any time. However, when I am spotted by a spider in a cave, he busts me. A couple other times when just walking around by the bay. Mission justs fails. I've completed the game on easy with no problems like that, but now wanted to try it on expert. Which is MUCH harder!

I can't believe I'm stuck on such a simple problem, but here it is:
I can't get to basso without being detected (and therefore losing)
I tried using water arrows on the torches- just shooting the arrow alerts the guard
I tried approaching in shadow, but between the torches and the lightning I get caught.
HELP.

If the mission is working properly, you shouldn't have to put out any torches or anything. Just make sure you're not armed and walk right up to him. A few people kep getting attacked for no reason at all, and I don't believe anyone ever figured out what caused it. I hope that's not the case for you. I don't know if this problem had anything to do with playing with an unpatched version of Thief 2 or not, but I don't think so. Just in case you haven't noticed the 15 million mentions of this, make sure that your T2 is patched for these missions, particularly for Mission #2, or you will definitely run into problems.

they attacked me, and I am fully patched (my copy of thief 2 is patched as well..)
anyways, I managed it by creeping along the wall as slow as possible, hiding behind basso during the conversation, and sneaking away fast (during the conversation both guards were moving towards me in search mode..) but I managed it. thanks for trying to help.

heh, just found this thread. sorry for starting some new ones, i didn't realize this one existed.
anyway, i've got a bunch more questions. this is a really hard level. i've been reading through a few other posts to see if i could find any hints, but i'm not having much luck.
first, i should mention i'm still working on A Meeting with Basso, on Garrett difficulty.
1) i saw a mention of a bathroom and an attic. is this in the first mission? if so, where is it?
2) can you get into the tomb in the first mission? (yes or no)
3) i saw some mention of books, and i got the impression that there are many. i haven't found a single readable book so far, and only a few scrolls. i'm guessing i'm just missing a bunch, but could i get a few hints as to where i could find them (for the first mission only, please)?
4) is there any loot in the sewers? (yes or no)
5) is there a way into St. Luca's? (i think that's what the church-thing in Murkbell is called) (yes or no)
6) does the ladder in the barn lead anywhere important (ie. to loot or something) or is it there just to annoy? :)
um, i think that's it. thanks in advance for any and all help.

thanks much. i think i might have been to the place with the bathroom and attic and just missed them, though i'm not sure. if it's the same place, i couldn't figure out how to get by the guy walking around in the apartment. if it's not, i've got some searching to do.

i have to add a question:
isn't there something to do in this garden (where you need the garden gate key) beside this little loot near the fence?
i can't believe that's all - but i tried to climb every wall and everything else which came to my mind - without success.
