I can't knock out the guard in mission 1. You know when you mantle over that wall and go in the door to get to murkbell? you go in, whack the first guard, and go upstairs and whack the other one. However, the thief who is there refuses to be whacked. When blackjacked, he gasps once (normal) and then again (not normal) and the mission fails. It's like he's falling over once, then gasps and falls over a different way. The objectives fail me on the "dont kill and dont let anyone know you're a thief" box.
However, I picked him up before it failed me. It said "unconscious body" not corpse. Very strange.
The thief's no problem, but later on there is a guard who needs to be blackjacked and the same thing happens. I know there are other ways through, but I want to try this one. And the gas arrow seems wasteful :).

I found a walkthrough, but did not find it overly helpful. I don't really need a lot of chit-chat and commentary -- just information.
Somehow I managed to get myself to the Widow Inn before finding Basso. I can't seem to get out of this area. I came in through the sewers, from the dock area, but the current prevents me from going back to my starting point.
There seems to be no other way out. Can anyone help?

Hmm...the sewers should be able to take you back also. I know one of the paths back to the dock area is blocked by the current, but there should still be a tunnel in the sewers that take you back to the spinning wheel by the starting area.
Moreover, I have ghost reports and loot lists for these mission at (
http://home.online.no/~ajnilsen/hn/hn.htm) my site, if that should be of any interest later. Good luck though! These are awesome missions. :thumb:

In the end I did find a way out through the jail.
But I've got a huge problem. I am supposed to have two allowable knockouts in the difficulty level I'm playing. I haven't technically knocked anyone out yet, but I am stuck behind a guard that has moved so that I can no longer slip past him to get back out of a location. He has stopped patrolling and it just standing in the same place all the time. If I try to knock him out, I fail the mission.
Now, in two locations I knocked someone out and saved just to be sure, then reloaded just prior to the knockout and was able to get past the guard without knocking them out after all. In other words, the knockouts did not get saved. But for some reason these knockouts got "recorded." The two guards are still walking around, not blackjacked, yet I am being penalized for it. That seems to be a major flaw, because I wanted to save my knockouts until I really needed them. Now I'm completely stuck. Not happy about that at all.
Edit: By the way, I checked out your site. It looks great. I'll be using the information, for certain.

The guard is in full light, and he is not moving. There is no way past without being seen. My only hope was one of my two allegedly available knockouts.
If I try the usual thiefly distractions like a broadhead arrow into a far wall, I fail the mission. Gas arrow -- fail the mission. Blackjack from behind -- fail the mission.
Oh well. I'll just reload from an earlier save. But I know I'm going to need those two knockouts at some point, and I won't have them.
Edit....oh for the love of...Now that I've restarted the game, I apparently have my knockouts available again. Which is good.
I must say this mission is impressive. Just like a real Thief mission. What a joy.

The problem with the first mission is that you cannot alert anyone to your presence as a Thief. This means that you can only blackjack someone from behind (max 2) if they aren't aware of you. However, if they see you in the streets, then 30 seconds later you sneak up behind them and knock them out, they will know it was you and the mission fails; not because you have more than two knockouts, but because you were alerted as a thief (being seen using your weapon). What you need to do is wait behind the guard until he is unaware of you, something that could take up to 5-10 minutes. He should make a comment signifying this in the end, something like "guess it was nothing".
These strange laws of Thief can only be learned through a lot of gaming and hundreds of hours of mindless experimentation in the Thief world. Believe me, I've been there! ;)

Hey, thanks, but I've been playing Thief since 1998. I understand the game very, very well.
I have another question. I can't get anywhere near Basso. The guard spots me from miles away. Is there another way, other than the obvious? There are some doors just beside Basso -- is there an underground way to get to him? Otherwise, I can't complete the first part of this mission. I believe I've gone through the entire sewer area and don't see any way up to Basso. Any help appreciated.

Hope I didn't offend you. Obviously you are a more than ample player and know your way around. Sorry about that. :p
It's kinda weird because the guard there shouldn't alert to you unless he has seen you waving your weapons around. Normally those two guards by the gate (the archer and the swordsman by the dummy) are calm and don't mind you at all. So if you cannot reach Basso you must have done something illegal and blown your cover some other way.
Dunno what else to say but good luck! :thumb:

Thanks. Interesting, since I wasn't aware I had triggered any hostile reaction, but that must have been it.
I guess you really do have to meet Basso before doing anything else. The trouble was that I couldn't find him, and by the time I did I must have set someone off, although I can't imagine who, or when. Maybe I crouched somewhere and someone became suspicious.
Anyway I restarted the level, went straight to Basso, and on to more fun.
Now, if I could only get my hands on some cash before I rest...
